2019 SAG Award nominations: A Star is Born and Ozark top list of contenders

With another year almost over, the Screen Actors Guild have officially unveiled their nominations for the best of film and television.

On the cinematic side of things, A Star is Born leads the pack with four nods, including a place on the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture shortlist.

The latest remake of the music-based drama also scored a hat-trick of acting mentions for its stars, with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga both in contention for Leading Male Actor and Leading Female Actor respectively.

After missing out on a Golden Globe nom last week, veteran co-star Sam Elliott is acknowledged for his supporting turn.

The Spike Lee crime drama BlackKklansman and the historical dramedy The Favourite also impressed guild voters with three nominations each.

BlackKklansman joins A Star is Born in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast bracket, while also garnering acting nods for stars John David Washington and Adam Driver.

Despite surprisingly missing out on a place in the main category, The Favourite scored a hat-trick of noms for its cast with Olivia Colman shortlisted for Leading Female Actor, while co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz go head-to-head for the Supporting Female Actor gong.

The rest of the Outstanding Performance by a Cast line-up is contested by three box-office hits in the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther, the Asian-based romcom Crazy Rich Asians and, more unexpectedly, the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

Once again, BoRhap star Rami Malek earns a Leading Male Actor nod for his portrayal of celebrated singer Freddie Mercury and is joined by Christian Bale (Vice) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book).

Elsewhere, British actress Emily Blunt scores two acting nominations for her performances as magical nanny Mary Poppins in the Disney musical sequel Mary Poppins Returns and as protective mother Evelyn Abbott in the post-apocalyptic horror A Quiet Place.

In the case of Poppins, Blunt contests the Leading Female Actor category alongside Glenn Close (The Wife) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) while her competition for the Supporting Female Actor gong includes Amy Adams (Vice) and Margot Robbie (Mary Queen of Scots).

Meanwhile, the Supporting Male Actor field sees British performer Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) go head-to-head with previous category winner Mahershala Ali (Green Book) and Timothée Chalamet (Beautiful Boy).

Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble category is dominated by three Marvel blockbusters in the form of the aforementioned Black Panther as well as the mega hit Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp.

The rest of the line-up is completed by the western anthology The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and the action sequel Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

The 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 27 January 2019.

Meanwhile, the nominees in television provided a solid mix in the drama, comedy and limited series categories.

On the dramatic side of things, Netflix’s Ozark has set the early pace with four nominations, including a lucrative mention for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Additionally, the crime drama scored three nods for its cast with Jason Bateman acknowledged in Male Actor (Drama), while co-stars Laura Linney and Julia Garner go head-to-head in the Female Actor (Drama) field.

Ozark competes in a strong Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble line-up alongside Netflix’s Better Call Saul, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, NBC’s This is Us, and the final series of FX’s The Americans.

After winning the Male Actor (Drama) accolade last year, Sterling K. Brown (This is Us) is back to defend his crown with competition coming from Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale), John Krasinski (Jack Ryan) and Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).

Meanwhile, the Female Actor (Drama) category sees new contender Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) up against returning nominees Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale), and Robin Wright (House of Cards).

In the comedy fields, Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stands tall with an impressive four nominations, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

The period comedy also garnered double Female Actor (Comedy) nods for recent Emmy-winning actresses Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein, while co-star Tony Shalhoub is up for Male Actor (Comedy).

Netflix duo GLOW and The Kominsky Method join The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble shortlist along with FX’s Atlanta, and HBO’s Barry.

Both The Kominsky Method and Barry also garnered double Male Actor (Comedy) noms for their stars, with Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin representing the former, and recent Emmy winners Bill Hader and Henry Winkler acknowledged for the latter.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Brosnahan and Borstein are joined in a versatile Female Actor (Comedy) bracket by Alison Brie (GLOW) and veteran stars Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin (Grace and Frankie).

Elsewhere, Emmy holder Darren Criss is looking to clinch another gong after earning a Male Actor (Television Movie or Limited Series) nomination for his portrayal of serial-killer Andrew Cunanan in FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

However, his stellar competition consists of Antonio Banderas (Genius: Picasso), Bill Pullman (The Sinner) and British icons Hugh Grant (A Very English Scandal) and Sir Anthony Hopkins (King Lear).

Having already been shortlisted against each other in the film categories, Hollywood actresses Amy Adams and Emma Stone also lock horns in the Female Actor (TV Movie/Limited Series) field.

Adams is acknowledged for her performance in HBO’s Sharp Objects, while Stone earns a nod for her turn in Netflix’s Maniac.

Both stars are joined in their bracket by Adams’s Sharp Objects co-star Patricia Clarkson, and former Oscar winners Patricia Arquette (Escape at Donnemora) and Penélope Cruz (The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story).

Finally, the absence of six-time category winner Game of Thrones allows the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble accolade to be contested by Prime Video’s Jack Ryan, AMC’s The Walking Dead, HBO’s Westworld and Netflix duo GLOW and the recently-cancelled Daredevil.

The 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards ceremony will take place at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on 27 January 2019.
