After the Critic Choice Awards stamped their mark on the Oscar race yesterday with their nominees, today saw the SAG (Screen Actor’s Guild) become the next biggest group to reveal their contenders in various categories for both film and television.
The dream looks set to live on for upcoming musical epic Les Miserables as it shared the lead with Steven Spielberg’s historical biopic Lincoln and romantic dramedy Silver Linings Playbook garnering nominations for Best Ensemble Cast, Best Actor (Hugh Jackman), Best Supporting Actress (Anne Hathaway) and Best Stunt Ensemble.
Lincoln and Silver Linings also made it into Best Ensemble as they were both represented with three acting mentions each. The former received nods in Best Actor (Daniel Day-Lewis), Best Supporting Actor (Tommy Lee Jones) and Best Supporting Actress (Sally Field) while the latter got in for Best Actor (Bradley Cooper), Best Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Best Supporting Actor (Robert De Niro).
Argo and surprisingly The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel rounded off the Best Ensemble category with critic’s darling Zero Dark Thirty failing to make the cut. However leading lady Jessica Chastain was nodded in Best Actress for her role in the upcoming war thriller alongside Lawrence, Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone), Helen Mirren (Hitchcock) and Naomi Watts (The Impossible).
In Best Actor, Cooper, Day-Lewis and Jackman compete against John Hawkes (The Sessions) and Denzil Washington (Flight) though amazingly Joaquin Phoenix was snubbed for his superb performance in The Master.
His co-star from that film Amy Adams was also ignored for Best Supporting Actress with Field, Hathaway, Helen Hunt (The Sessions), Nicole Kidman (The Paperboy) and Maggie Smith (Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) all making the cut.
Javier Bardem was the stand-out nominee in the Best Supporting Actor category for his villainous turn in Skyfall as he was short-listed alongside De Niro, Jones, Alan Arkin (Argo) and Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master).
Les Miserables also goes up against blockbusters The Amazing Spider-Man, The Bourne Legacy, The Dark Knight Rises and Skyfall in the battle for Best Stunt Ensemble.
