2017 TV BAFTA nominations: The Crown reigns supreme with eleven nods

The nominations for the 62nd BAFTA Television Awards have landed.

After impressing at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this year, Netflix’s The Crown has frontrunner status with a mighty eleven nods, including five in the main categories.

The lavish royal drama, which covers the early years of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign, is shortlisted in the Drama Series field, where it competes against BBC One duo Happy Valley and War and Peace, and ITV’s The Durrells.

Four of its cast members are acknowledged for their performances, with Claire Foy earning another Leading Actress nom for her portrayal of the young royal monarch.

Additionally, co-star (and onscreen sister) Vanessa Kirby is up for Supporting Actress for playing Princess Margaret, while Jared Harris and Hollywood veteran John Lithgow are both included in the Supporting Actor line-up for their respective roles as King George VI and prime minister Winston Churchill.

However, Matt Smith missed out on a BAFTA nod despite stellar praise for his performance as a young Prince Phillip.

Elsewhere, BBC Two’s The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses and Channel 4’s National Treasure are among the standout programmes in contention for the Best Miniseries accolade, with central stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Robbie Coltrane going head-to-head in the Leading Actor category.

ITV’s The Secret and BBC One’s latest adaptation of The Witness for the Prosecution are also recognised in the Miniseries field, while the Single Drama line-up is filled by four BBC productions including Damilola, Our Loved Boy and Murdered by My Father.

Having lost out on a Leading Actress BAFTA in 2015, Sarah Lancashire will be looking to gain recognition for her reprised role as Yorkshire sergeant Catherine Cawood in the second series of the hit BBC One crime drama Happy Valley. Her competition includes Nigerian-born star Nikki Amuka-Bird (NW) and Liverpudlian newcomer Jodie Comer (Thirteen).

Meanwhile, Adeel Akhtar (Murdered by My Father) and Babou Ceesay (Damilola, Our Loved Boy) earn Leading Actor nods for their powerful performances while the latter’s co-star Wunmi Mosaku contests a versatile Supporting Actress category with Siobhan Finneran (Happy Valley) and Nicola Walker (Last Tango in Halifax).

Back in January, the BBC One thriller The Night Manager made a big impact on awards season, with stars Tom Hiddleston, and Hugh Laurie among those to enjoy success at the Golden Globes.

However, none of those big names were acknowledged by BAFTA, as fellow cast member Tom Hollander scored the only acting nod for his supporting turn as Major “Corky” Lance Corkoran.

In the comedy fields, BBC Three duo Fleabag and People Just Do Nothing compete in the Scripted Comedy category alongside Sky Atlantic’s Camping and Channel 4’s Flowers.

In the case of Fleabag, the dark comedy earns two Female Comedy Performance noms for creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge and BAFTA favourite Olivia Colman, with stern competition coming from Lesley Manville (Mum) and Diane Morgan (Cunk on Shakespeare).

Meanwhile, the Male Comedy Performance line-up sees Steve Coogan back in contention for his reprised role as hapless Norwich presenter Alan Partridge in Sky Atlantic’s Alan Partridge’s Scissored Isle alongside Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), Harry Enfield (The Windsors) and David Mitchell (Upstart Crow).

Elsewhere, BBC duo Casualty and EastEnders fight it out for the Soap & Continuing Drama prize with ITV’s Coronation Street ignored for the first time since 2009 while a powerhouse International category sees the multi-award-winning miniseries The People vs. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story and the hit Netflix series Stranger Things come up against The Night Of and Transparent.

The newly-conceived Virgin TV’s Must-See Moments are contested by lauded sequences from seven series, including ‘Battle of the Bastards’ from Game of Thrones, ‘Urgent Exit Required’ from Line of Duty, and the ‘Snakes v Iguana Chase’ from Planet Earth II.

The rest of the notable television programmes in contention for BAFTA recognition are Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent, The Great British Bake Off, Hillsborough, Strictly Come Dancing, Taskmaster, and Who Do You Think You Are?.

This year’s BAFTA Awards ceremony will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 14 May, with presenter Sue Perkins on hosting duties for the first time.
