John Boyega gets caught up in the 1967 Detroit riot in official trailer for Kathryn Bigelow’s Detroit

After previously making acclaimed films about the war and the hunt for Osama bin Laden, Kathryn Bigelow is once again delving into gritty territory for her latest feature.

The Oscar-winning director of The Hurt Locker (2009) and Zero Dark Thirty (2012) has now turned her attention to the true story of the 1967 Detroit riots for her upcoming film Detroit.

The biopic drama has premiered its official trailer online.

Written again by Bigelow’s screenwriting colleague Mark Boal, the film focuses on how a police raid in Detroit led to one of the most violent riots in US history which claimed the lives of over twenty people.

The film features a mixture of rising stars and experienced performers which include John Boyega (Attack the Block, Star Wars: The Force Awakens), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, Sing Street), Hannah Murray (Skins, Game of Thrones), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner, The Revenant), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker, Captain America: Civil War), Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton, Kong: Skull Island) and John Krasinski (The Office (US), 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi).

Detroit is scheduled for release in America on August 4th though a UK date has not been specified.
