2024 SAG Awards: ‘Barbenheimer’ and Succession head film and television nominations

The adrenaline rush of the 2023/24 awards season continues to flow after the Screen Actor’s Guild unveiled their nominations for film and television.

On the cinematic front, it was another memorable day for ‘Barbenheimer‘ as blockbuster giants Barbie and Oppenheimer shared the early momentum with four nominations apiece.

Both films are shortlisted for the coveted Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture accolade alongside the satirical comedy American Fiction, the musical remake The Color Purple, and Martin Scorsese’s crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon.

After bagging five Golden Globe wins last Sunday, Oppenheimer also scored three acting nominations for performers Cillian Murphy in Leading Actor, Emily Blunt in Supporting Actress, and Robert Downey Jr. in Supporting Actor.

For Barbie, the fantasy comedy secured nods for stars Margot Robbie in Leading Actress and Ryan Gosling in Supporting Actor, as well as being shortlisted for Best Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble.

Meanwhile, recent Globe winners Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Emma Stone (Poor Things) go head-to-head in a competitive Leading Actress category that also includes Annette Bening (NYAD) and Carey Mulligan (Maestro). In Leading Actor, Paul Giamatti will be hoping to bolster his Oscar hopes after his own Globe victory against the likes of Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).

The rest of the main acting contenders are Colman Domingo (Rustin), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Penélope Cruz (Ferrari), Jodie Foster (NYAD), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Best Supporting Actress frontrunner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers).

As expected, a number of stars missed out on key nominations including Leonardo DiCaprio for Killers of the Flower Moon as well as the likes of Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) and May December trio Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.

The 2024 Screen Actor’s Guild Awards will stream live on Netflix on 24 February with celebrated actress and musician Barbra Streisand the latest recipient of the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.
