The adrenaline rush of the 2023/24 awards season continues to flow after the Screen Actors Guild unveiled their nominations for film and television.
On the cinematic front, it was another memorable day for ‘Barbenheimer‘ as blockbuster giants Barbie and Oppenheimer shared the early momentum with four nods apiece.
Both films are shortlisted for the coveted Best Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture accolade alongside the satirical comedy American Fiction, the musical remake The Color Purple, and Martin Scorsese’s crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon.
After bagging five Golden Globe wins last Sunday, Oppenheimer also scored three acting noms, with Irish performer Cillian Murphy contesting the Leading Male Actor category, while co-stars Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. are recognised in the supporting fields.
For Barbie, the fantasy comedy secured nods for stars Margot Robbie in Leading Female Actor and Ryan Gosling in Supporting Male Actor, while also being shortlisted for Outstanding Stunt Ensemble.
Meanwhile, recent Globe winners Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Emma Stone (Poor Things) go head-to-head in a competitive Leading Female Actor category that also includes Annette Bening (Nyad) and Carey Mulligan (Maestro).
In the Leading Male Actor line-up, Paul Giamatti will be looking to bolster his Oscar hopes after his own Globe victory against the likes of Bradley Cooper (Maestro) and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).
The rest of the acting contenders are Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Sterling K. Brown (American Fiction), Penélope Cruz (Ferrari), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Willem Dafoe (Poor Things), Robert De Niro (Killers of the Flower Moon), Jodie Foster (NYAD), and Best Supporting Actress frontrunner Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers).
As well as Barbie, the other high-profile films in contention for the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize includes blockbuster sequels Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
As expected, a number of stars missed out on key nominations including Leonardo DiCaprio (Killers of the Flower Moon) as well as the likes of Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), Greta Lee (Past Lives), Mark Ruffalo (Poor Things), Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) and May December trio Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards will be streamed live on Netflix on 24 February, with celebrated actress and musician Barbra Streisand the latest recipient of the SAG Lifetime Achievement Award.

Additionally, stars Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen go head-to-head in the Male Actor (Drama) line-up, while recent Globe winner Sarah Snook is in contention for the Female Actor (Drama) gong.
Fellow HBO series The Last of Us also impressed SAG voters with a quartet of nominations, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble as well as acting nods for leading duo Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.
The latter star finds herself in competition for Female Actor (Drama) from the likes of Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), and recent Golden Globe winner Elizabeth Debicki (The Crown).
On the comedy front, FX’s The Bear and the final series of Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso both scored four nominations apiece, including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series where they go up against ABC’s Abbott Elementary, HBO’s Barry and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building.
The Bear duo Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachrach face-off against Ted Lasso pair Jason Sudeikis and Brett Goldstein in the Male Actor (Comedy) field, while Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso) lock horns in the Female Actor (Comedy) bracket.
The other notable comedy contenders include Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary), Bill Hader (Barry) and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel duo Rachel Brosnahan and Alex Borstein.
