2023 SAG winners: Everything Everywhere All at Once edges closer to Oscar glory with multiple gongs

Everything Everywhere All at Once has taken a giant step towards Oscar success after coasting to four wins at last night’s Screen Actor Guild Awards.

The sci-fi action adventure claimed four key gongs, including the crucial Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize ahead of the likes of The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans.

The film’s SAG honour was the second major accolade it achieved this weekend. On Saturday, it won the top prize at the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards, another valuable indicator of Academy Awards success.

Additionally, leading stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis scored wins for their performances, with Yeoh clinching Best Actress for her role as disillusioned laundromat co-owner Evelyn Wang.

The seasoned Chinese star revived her Oscar hopes by winning the category ahead of her current frontrunner Cate Blanchett (Tár). During her speech, an emotional Yeoh said;

“This is not just for me, it’s for every little girl who looks like me.”

After a mini-blip at BAFTA last weekend, Quan consolidated his Oscar bid by taking home Best Supporting Actor for his performance as meek yet devoted laundromat co-owner Waymond Wang.

In an upset, veteran Curtis overcame fierce competition from the likes of Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) to win Best Supporting Actress for her role as pesky IRS auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdre.

94-year-old actor James Hong, who plays Yeoh’s father in Everything Everywhere, gave a comical acceptance speech, in which he vowed to return to the ceremony when he was 100 years old.

“I got my first SAG card 70 years ago. Back in those days… producers said that Asians were not good enough and they are not box office – but look at us now”.

Elsewhere, Brendan Fraser upset Oscar frontrunner Austin Butler (Elvis) by clinching Best Actor for his role as a morbidly-obese teacher in the emotional drama The Whale.

During his emotional speech, Fraser said;

“I will treasure this but never more than what I used to keep in my wallet, which was my SAG card, that I earned in 1991. It made me feel like I belonged. If you told that guy back then, that I’d be standing here right now, I would not have believed you.”

The Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture prize was awarded to the action sequel Top Gun: Maverick, as it prevailed over the likes of Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

However, the Irish dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin endured a disastrous evening by failing to win from any of its five nominations; the most losses for a film in SAG history.

On a positive note, the Lifetime Achievement award was presented to two-time Oscar-winning actress Sally Field for her work in film and television over the past few decades.

Among her many on-screen roles include Gidget (1965-66), The Flying Nun (1967-70), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), Norma Rae (1979), Absence of Malice (1981), Places in the Heart (1984), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Steel Magnolias (1989), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Forrest Gump (1994), Brothers & Sisters (2006-11), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Lincoln (2012) and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022).

Additionally, Jennifer Coolidge took home Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her reprised role as erratic heiress Tanya McQuoid-Hunt.

In a tight battle, the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series award was given to Jason Bateman for his performance as money launderer Marty Byrde in Ozark. Once again, this meant another loss for Bob Odenkirk and his lauded portrayal of Jimmy McGill in the final series of Better Call Saul!

On the comedy side, Abbott Elementary continued its dominance throughout awards season by winning the key prize of Outstanding Performance by a Comedy Ensemble ahead of the likes of Barry, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building.

For the second year in a row, Jean Smart bagged Outstanding Actress by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her reprised role as veteran comedian actress Deborah Vance in Hacks. The Male prize was awarded to Jeremy Allen White for his turn as a stressed-out chef in the dark comedy The Bear.

Elsewhere, reigning Best Actress Oscar winner Jessica Chastain scored further success on the television front by taking home Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie for her portrayal of country singer Tammy Wynette in the music-based mini-series George & Tammy.

Her win came at the expense of strong competitors, including Golden Globe and Emmy winner Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout) and Emily Blunt (The English).

Meanwhile, veteran actor Sam Elliott overcame the likes of Evan Peters (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story) and Black Bird duo Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser to win Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series/TV Movie for his role in the historical western series 1883.

Finally, the sci-fi fantasy series Stranger Things clinched the Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble prize ahead of other high-profile contenders including Andor, House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
