2023 SAG Awards: Everything Everywhere All at Once edges closer to Oscar glory with multiple gongs

Everything Everywhere All at Once has taken a giant step towards Oscar success after securing multiple wins at last night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

The sci-fi adventure, which centres on an immigrant launderette owner’s mission to save the multiverse, claimed four key prizes, including the crucial Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture accolade ahead of the likes of The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans.

This triumph came at a crucial time for the film after it also landed the top prize at the Producers Guild of America (PGA) Awards the night before.

Additionally, three of the A24 production’s cast were triumphant in the acting categories.

After disappointment at BAFTA last week, Malaysian performer Michelle Yeoh resurrected her hopes of making Oscar history by clinching the Leading Female Actor gong for her performance as disillusioned laundromat co-owner Evelyn Quan Wang.

During her speech, an emotional Yeoh said;

“This is not just for me, it’s for every little girl who looks like me.”

Meanwhile, former child star Ke Huy Quan consolidated his unlikely bid for a gold statuette by taking home Supporting Male Actor for his turn as meek yet devoted laundromat co-owner Waymond Wang.

In an upset, veteran Jamie Lee Curtis overcame fierce competition from the likes of Angela Bassett (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and Kerry Condon (The Banshees of Inisherin) to win Supporting Female Actor for her role as pesky IRS auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdre.

94-year-old actor James Hong, who plays Yeoh’s father in the film, gave a comical acceptance speech, in which he vowed to return to the ceremony when he was 100 years old.

“I got my first SAG card 70 years ago. Back in those days… producers said that Asians were not good enough and they are not box office – but look at us now”.

Elsewhere, Brendan Fraser surprised Oscar frontrunner Austin Butler (Elvis) by clinching the Leading Male Actor gong for his performance as morbidly-obese teacher Charlie in the drama The Whale.

During his emotional speech, Fraser said;

“I will treasure this but never more than what I used to keep in my wallet, which was my SAG card, that I earned in 1991. It made me feel like I belonged. If you told that guy back then, that I’d be standing here right now, I would not have believed you.”

Away from the acting fields, there was success for Top Gun: Maverick, as the hit action sequel secured the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize ahead of the likes of Avatar: The Way of Water and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

However, the Irish dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin endured a disastrous evening by failing to win from any of its five nominations; the most losses for a film in SAG history.

On a positive note, the Lifetime Achievement award was presented to two-time Oscar-winning actress Sally Field for her work in film and television over the past few decades.

Among her many on-screen roles include Gidget (1965-66), The Flying Nun (1967-70), Smokey and the Bandit (1977), Norma Rae (1979), Absence of Malice (1981), Places in the Heart (1984), Murphy’s Romance (1985), Steel Magnolias (1989), Mrs. Doubtfire (1993), Forrest Gump (1994), Brothers & Sisters (2006-11), The Amazing Spider-Man (2012), Lincoln (2012) and Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty (2022).

In the television fields, HBO’s The White Lotus and ABC’s Abbott Elementary were among the key victors in the major categories.

In the case of The White Lotus, the second series of the satirical caper nabbed two accolades, including the coveted Outstanding Performance by a Drama Ensemble accolade ahead of strong contenders including The Crown, and the final series of both Better Call Saul, and Ozark.

Additionally, beloved cast member Jennifer Coolidge took home the Female Actor Drama gong for her reprised role as erratic heiress Tanya McQuoid-Hunt.

In a tight battle, the Male Actor (Drama) award was given to Jason Bateman for his performance as money launderer Marty Byrde in the swansong series of Netflix’s Ozark, with victory coming at the expense of the unfortunate Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul).

On the comedy side, the school-based sitcom Abbott Elementary continued its dominance throughout awards season by winning the Outstanding Performance by a Comedy Ensemble prize ahead of the likes of Barry, and Only Murders in the Building.

For the second year in a row, Jean Smart bagged the Female Actor (Comedy) gong for her reprised role as veteran comedian Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s Hacks.

Meanwhile, Jeremy Allen White saw off competition from Only Murders in the Building duo Steve Martin and Martin Short to win the Male Actor (Comedy) statuette for his performance as overburdened chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in FX’s The Bear.

Elsewhere, reigning Best Actress Oscar winner Jessica Chastain scored further success on the television front by taking home Female Actor (Limited Series or Television Movie) for her portrayal of country singer Tammy Wynette in the music-based Showtime miniseries George & Tammy.

Having overcome Emmy and Golden Globe victor Amanda Seyfried, Chastain

The Male Actor (Limited Series/TV Movie) category produced a more unexpected outcome, as veteran actor Sam Elliott overcame the likes of Evan Peters (Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story) and Black Bird duo Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser to win for his role as experienced agent Shea Brennan in Paramount+’s 1883.

Finally, the latest series of Netflix’s Stranger Things clinched the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble prize ahead of other high-profile contenders including Andor, House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
