The nominations for this year’s TV BAFTA Awards have been announced with BBC duo The Responder and This is Going to Hurt leading the way with six nods apiece.
The Responder, which follows a troubled Liverpool police officer, contests the Best Drama Series category, while central star Martin Freeman is acknowledged in a strong Best Leading Actor line-up. Additionally, co-stars Adelayo Adedayo and Josh Finan are both recognised in the Supporting Actress/Actor categories.
Adam Kay’s darkly comic drama, This Is Going to Hurt – which is adapted from his bestselling memoir about his time as a junior doctor – is recognised in Best Mini-Series while Ben Whishaw contests Best Leading Actor for his fictionalised portrayal of Kay.
However, co-star Ambika Mod was shockingly overlooked for her performance as tragic nurse Dr. Shruti Acharya.
Elsewhere, Apple TV+ enjoyed a solid showing from both the comedy drama Bad Sisters, and the spy thriller Slow Horses as both programmes scored five nominations each along with the BBC miniseries The English and Netflix’s historical series The Crown.
In the lead acting categories, previous film winners Imelda Staunton (The Crown) and Kate Winslet (I Am Ruth) go head-to-head in a powerhouse Lead Actress line-up that also includes Maxine Peake (Anne) and Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie Too).
As for Lead Actor, Gary Oldman receives his first acting nomination in television for his performance as a scruffy yet experienced MI5 boss in Slow Horses, while Cillian Murphy finally scores a first BAFTA nod for his lauded role as gangster Tommy Shelby in the final series of Peaky Blinders.
On the comedy front, the BBC sitcom Am I Being Unreasonable? and the Channel 4 sitcom Big Boys both picked up four nods apiece while the final series of Derry Girls also nabbed three mentions including Best Scripted Comedy.
There are a number of high-profile stars nominated for acting awards including previous winners Sarah Lancashire (Julia), Vicky McClure (Without Sin), Fiona Shaw (Andor), Adeel Akhtar (Sherwood), Will Sharpe (The White Lotus) and Daisy May Cooper (Am I Being Unreasonable?), and other high-profile stars including Taron Egerton (Black Bird), Chaske Spencer (The English), Anne-Marie Duff (Bad Sisters), Lesley Manville (Sherwood), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses), Diane Morgan (Cunk on Earth), Joseph Gilgun (Brassic), Stephen Merchant (The Outlaws), and Daniel Radcliffe (Weird: The Al Yankovic Story).
Among the acting newcomers receiving their first BAFTA nominations include Saffron Hocking (Top Boy), Salim Daw (The Crown), Taj Atwal (Hullraisers), Lucy Beaumont (Meet the Richardsons), Siobhán McSweeney (Derry Girls), Jon Pointing and youngster Lenny Rush (Am I Being Unreasonable?).
Elsewhere, the Live Event category sees nominations for both the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last June and her state funeral in September.
Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan will share hosting duties for this year’s ceremony, which takes place on Sunday 14 May.
