2023 EE BAFTA nominations: All Quiet on the Western Front leads with fourteen nods

With less than a week to go until the Oscar nominations are announced, BAFTA have unveiled their own illustrious line-up of contenders.

The surprise leader of the pack is Netflix’s powerful adaptation of All Quiet on the Western Front, with a supreme fourteen nods.

The war epic, which follows a group of young German soldiers experiencing the horrors of fighting in the First World War, contests a strong Best Film line-up, while filmmaker Edward Berger is shortlisted in the Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay categories.

Additionally, cast member Albrect Schuch is acknowledged in Best Supporting Actor, while the rest of the nominations are for technical achievements.

It is the strongest showing for a film at BAFTA since The King’s Speech back in 2011.

Elsewhere, Oscar frontrunners The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere All at Once continued their awards’ dominance with ten nominations each including Best Film.

The Banshees of Inisherin, which centres on the sudden fallout between two old friends, also earns a spot on the Outstanding British Film shortlist while filmmaker Martin McDonagh earns double nods for his writing and directing.

After success at the Golden Globes last week, Colin Farrell is in contention for Best Leading Actor, while co-stars Brendan Gleeson, Barry Keoghan and Kerry Condon contest the supporting categories.

In the case of Everything Everywhere All at Once, filmmakers Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert both receive screenplay and directing nods for their work on the sci-fi adventure.

Additionally, recent Golden Globe winners Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis are up for Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively, while veteran co-star Jamie Lee Curtis is in contention for Best Supporting Actress.

Elsewhere, the music-based biopic Elvis performed well with a hefty nine nominations including Best Film with star man Austin Butler earning a Best Leading Actor nod for his portrayal of legendary musician Elvis Presley.

Butler’s competition in a versatile Leading Actor line-up that includes Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy (Living).

The final Best Film contender is the drama Tár which scored an additional four nods including Best Leading Actress for central star Cate Blanchett. The three-time BAFTA winner is joined in her category by Ana de Armas (Blonde), Viola Davis (The Woman King), and Danielle Deadwyler (Till).

In the Outstanding British Film category, the indie drama Aftersun and the romantic comedy Good Luck to You, Leo Grande are in contention alongside other recognisable features including Empire of Light, Living and Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical.

There are also places on the shortlist for a number of smaller films including Brian and Charles, The Swimmers and The Wonder.

Elsewhere, a number of other homegrown stars are in contention for acting honours including Carey Mulligan (She Said), Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse), Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), and Micheal Ward (Empire of Light).

Recent Golden Globe victor Angela Bassett earns a Best Supporting Actress nod for her performance in the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, with Hong Chau (The Whale) and Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness) among her fellow nominees.

One actor that performed well was Irish star Daryl McCormack, as he scored a Best Leading Actor mention for his role as a handsome male escort in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.

Additionally, McCormack also contests an impressive EE Rising Star award line-up that features British quartet Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, I Wanna Dance with Somebody), Sheila Atim (The Underground Railroad, The Woman King), Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Emily), and Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education, Living).

Meanwhile, the Best Director line-up sees Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook and Gina Prince-Bythewood earn surprise nominations for their respective work on Decision to Leave, and The Woman King.

Elsewhere, Guillermo del Toro’s stop-motion adaptation of Pinocchio competes against the likes of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and Turning Red in the Best Animated Film category, while the contenders for Best Film Not in the English Language include the Golden Globe-winning Argentina, 1985 and the Irish drama The Quiet Girl.

However, there were a number of key snubs, led by a shocking underperformance from Steven Spielberg’s semi-autobiographical drama The Fabelmans which managed just one nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Additionally, the notable acting snubs include Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick), Felix Kammerer (All Quiet on the Western Front), Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Brad Pitt (Babylon), Ben Whishaw (Women Talking), and Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans).

The 76th BAFTA Film Awards will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 19 February with seasoned British actor Richard E. Grant on hosting duties for the first time.
