2023/24 Golden Globe (film) nominations: ‘Barbenheimer’ reigns supreme with impressive haul

The Golden Globes have spoken folks…

This afternoon saw the newly-reformed organisation unveil their list of nominations for the best of film in 2023 with two of this year’s biggest blockbusters leading the way.

In expanded fields of six contenders per category, the fantasy comedy Barbie and the autobiographical epic Oppenheimer dominate proceedings with a combined seventeen nods with the former edging ahead with nine.

Based on an original story about the beloved Mattel doll, Barbie is up for Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) while filmmaker Greta Gerwig is nominated for both her directing and screenplay.

Leading star Margot Robbie contests Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for her performance as a disillusioned Barbie while co-star Ryan Gosling is acknowledged in Best Supporting Actor for his humorous turn as Ken. Additionally, musicians Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa are nominated for their hit songs “What Was I Made For?” and “Dance the Night” alongside the witty track “I’m Just Ken”.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer performed well with a lucrative eight nods including Best Motion Picture (Drama) with filmmaker Christopher Nolan also honoured for his directing and writing.

As expected, Cillian Murphy receives a Best Actor (Drama) nomination for his portrayal of renowned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer while co-stars Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. are shortlisted in the Supporting Actress/Actor categories.

Murphy’s opposition in his group includes frontrunner Bradley Cooper (Maestro) as well as Colman Domingo (Rustin), Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers), and fellow Irishman Barry Keoghan (Saltburn).

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are also in contention for a newly-conceived Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement award that includes other notable blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

Elsewhere, Martin Scorsese’s fact-based crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon and the fantasy comedy Poor Things also landed multiple mentions with seven nominations each.

Killers competes against Oppenheimer in the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category while leading stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro all contest their respective acting groups.

Native American actress Gladstone faces stern competition in Best Actress (Drama) from the likes of Annette Bening (Nyad), Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Carey Mulligan (Maestro).

Poor Things competes in a strong Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) line-up that also includes American Fiction, The Holdovers and Air while there are acting nods for Emma Stone in Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo in Supporting Actor.

The main stars in contention for leading comedy/musical honours include Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Natalie Portman (May December), Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Timothée Chalamet (Wonka), Matt Damon (Air), Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).

There was also a strong showing from the romantic drama Past Lives which scored five nominations including Best Film (Drama) as well as director and writing nominations for filmmaker Celine Song. The Best Film (Drama) category also includes the French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall, the biopic drama Maestro and the Nazi-based drama The Zone of Interest.

Other recognisable actors to land acting nods are Greta Lee (Past Lives), Charles Melton (May December), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Jodie Foster (Nyad), Julianne Moore (May December), Rosamund Pike (Saltburn) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers).

On the animation front, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie picked up three mentions each including Best Animated Film for which they go up against the likes of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Pixar’s Elemental and Disney’s Wish.

As to be expected, there were a number of notable omissions with The Color Purple missing out on a Best Film (Comedy/Musical) nomination while the key acting snubs included Adam Driver (Ferrari), Zac Efron (The Iron Claw), Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon), Viola Davis (Air), Taraji P. Henson (The Color Purple) and Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers).

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Sunday 7 January with a host not yet confirmed.
