2024 Golden Globe (film) nominations: ‘Barbenheimer’ reigns supreme with impressive haul

This afternoon saw the newly-reformed Golden Globes unveil their nominations for the best of film in 2023 with two of this year’s biggest blockbusters leading the way.

In expanded fields of six contenders per category, the fantasy comedy Barbie and the autobiographical epic Oppenheimer dominate proceedings with a combined seventeen nods, with the former edging ahead with nine.

Based on an original story about the beloved Mattel doll, Barbie is up for Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) while filmmaker Greta Gerwig is nominated for both her directing and screenplay.

Leading star Margot Robbie contests Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) for her performance as a disillusioned Barbie, while co-star Ryan Gosling is acknowledged in Best Supporting Actor for his humorous turn as Ken.

Additionally, musicians Billie Eilish and Dua Lipa are nominated for their hit songs “What Was I Made For?” and “Dance the Night” alongside the witty track “I’m Just Ken”.

Meanwhile, Oppenheimer performed well with a lucrative eight nods including Best Motion Picture (Drama) with filmmaker Christopher Nolan also honoured for his directing and writing.

As expected, Cillian Murphy receives a Best Actor (Drama) nomination for his portrayal of renowned physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, while co-stars Emily Blunt and Robert Downey Jr. are shortlisted in the supporting categories.

Murphy’s opposition in the Best Actor (Drama) line-up includes Bradley Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin), and fellow Irish stars Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) and Andrew Scott (All of Us Strangers).

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are also in contention for a newly-conceived Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement award that includes other notable blockbusters like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1 and Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.

Elsewhere, Martin Scorsese’s fact-based crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon and the fantasy comedy Poor Things also landed multiple mentions with seven nominations each.

Killers of the Flower Moon competes in the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category while stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro all contest their respective acting fields.

In the case of Gladstone, the Native American performer faces stern competition for Best Actress (Drama) from the likes of Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall), and Carey Mulligan (Maestro).

There was also a strong showing from Past Lives, as the bittersweet romance scored five nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Drama).

Additionally, filmmaker Celine Song earns double noms for her writing and directing, while Greta Lee is up for Best Actress (Drama).

The rest of the Best Motion Picture (Drama) category is further contested by the French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall, the autobiographical drama Maestro and the Nazi-based drama The Zone of Interest.

Meanwhile, Poor Things competes in a strong Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) line-up that also includes American Fiction, The Holdovers and Air, while there are acting nods for Emma Stone in Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and double Supporting Actor mentions for Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo.

Stone contests the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) line-up alongside other high-profile stars including Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings) and Natalie Portman (May December), while Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), and Finnish contender Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves) round off the rest of the nominees.

Meanwhile, the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) field sees previous category winners Matt Damon (Air) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers) go up against the likes of Nicolas Cage (Dream Scenario), Timothée Chalamet (Wonka), and Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction).

The other recognisable actors to land acting nods are Annette Bening (Nyad), Danielle Brooks (The Color Purple), Jodie Foster (Nyad), Charles Melton (May December), Julianne Moore (May December), Rosamund Pike (Saltburn), Joaquin Phoenix (Beau is Afraid), Cailee Spaeny (Priscilla) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers).

On the animation front, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and The Super Mario Bros. Movie pick up three mentions each including Best Animated Film for which they go up against the likes of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, Pixar’s Elemental and Disney’s Wish.

As to be expected, there were a number of notable omissions with The Color Purple missing out on a Best Film (Comedy/Musical) nomination while the key acting snubs included Viola Davis (Air), Adam Driver (Ferrari), Zac Efron (The Iron Claw), Taraji P. Henson (The Color Purple), Joaquin Phoenix (Napoleon) and Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers).

The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 7 January, with a host not yet confirmed.
