Last night saw the Screen Actors Guild unveil their 2022 winners for both film and television at a live ceremony filled with some small surprises.
On the cinematic front, the indie drama CODA clinched two key prizes, including a shock win in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture field.
The Apple TV+ feature becomes the first film with a predominantly deaf cast to land the accolade, with victory coming at the expense of Belfast, Don’t Look Up and House of Gucci.
Additionally, seasoned deaf actor Troy Kotsur was awarded the Supporting Male Actor prize for his emotional turn as fisherman Frank Rossi.
Elsewhere, Jessica Chastain strengthened her bid for Oscar glory by winning the Leading Female Actor gong for her portrayal of real-life televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in the biopic drama The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
Her victory saw her persevere over the likes of Olivia Colman (The Lost Daughter), and recent Golden Globe winner Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos).
As expected, Will Smith landed the Leading Male Actor trophy for his performance as tennis coach Richard Williams, the father of tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, in the sports biopic King Richard.
During his acceptance speech, an emotional Smith paid tribute to the man he embodied, as well as the two sisters at the heart of the film.
Elsewhere, Ariana DeBose took a giant stride towards her own Oscar success after taking home the Supporting Female Actor statuette for her turn as Anita in the musical remake West Side Story.
Meanwhile, the James Bond outing No Time to Die picked up the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble accolade ahead of Dune and Marvel blockbusters Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Finally, veteran British actress Dame Helen Mirren was honoured with this year’s SAG Life Achievement Award for a remarkable career in film and television with notable roles including The Long Good Friday (1980), The Madness of King George (1994), Gosford Park (2001), Calendar Girls (2003), Elizabeth I (2005), The Queen (2006), The Last Station (2009) and the Prime Suspect series (1991-2006).

Over in the television categories, HBO’s Succession and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso both triumphed in the drama and comedy fields.
In the case of Succession, the third series of the family saga overcame stern competition from the likes of The Handmaid’s Tale, and The Morning Show to win the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series prize.
However, none of the Succession cast members were able to land acting honours as Netflix’s Squid Game pulled off two notable upsets.
Korean stars Lee Jung-jae and Jung Ho-yeon both took home the Male Actor (Drama) and Female Actor (Drama) gongs for their respective performances as ill-fated game show contestants Seong Gi-hun and Kang Sae-byeok.
Additionally, the hit Korean series also prevailed in the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble category ahead of fellow Netflix programme Cobra Kai and Marvel duo The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki.
Elsewhere, Ted Lasso scored two crucial wins including the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series accolade, ahead of the likes of The Great and Only Murders in the Building.
For the second year in a row, central star Jason Sudeikis clinched the Male Actor (Comedy) statuette for his returning role as folksy football coach Ted Lasso in the football-based ‘sitcom’.
Meanwhile, Jean Smart secured another Female Actor (Comedy) gong for her raved turn as veteran comedian Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s Hacks, with Ted Lasso actresses Juno Temple and Hannah Waddingham among her rival nominees.
In the miniseries fields, British star Kate Winslet followed up her recent Golden Globe triumph by taking home Female Actor (Television Movie or Limited Series) for her acclaimed performance as Detective Marianne “Mare” Sheehan in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.
Finally, seasoned performer Michael Keaton overcame Emmy winner Ewan McGregor (Halston) to win Male Actor (TV Movie/Limited Series) for his portrayal of Dr. Samuel Finnix in Hulu’s Dopesick.
