It was another unforgettable night in Hollywood as the biggest names in television came together to celebrate the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards.
For the second time in three years, HBO’s Succession celebrated three key wins in the major categories, including the prestigious Outstanding Drama Series award ahead of the likes of Better Call Saul, Severance and Squid Game.
British star Matthew Macfadyen saw off co-stars Nicholas Braun and Kieran Culkin to take home Supporting Actor for his hit role as Tom Wambsgans, while showrunner Jesse Armstrong nabbed his third victory in the writing category for his work on the Series 3 finale of the family saga.
Armstrong used his speech to make a jibe about the monarchy, which garnered a muted reception from the audience.
“It’s a big week for successions – new King in the UK, this for us. Evidently a bit more voting involved in our winning than Prince Charles.”
However, central duo Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong both lost out on Lead Actor in what proved to be a historic night for Squid Game star Lee Jung-jae.
The South Korean performer prevailed against other strong contenders including Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul) and Adam Scott (Severance) to become the first Asian actor to win the prize for his role as desperate contestant Seong Gi-hun in the Netflix phenomenon.
In addiction to Jung-Jae’s triumph, the programme’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk also became the first Asian to bag the directing prize, ahead of three Succession helmers.
Elsewhere, Zendaya took home her second Lead Actress Emmy in three years for her reprised role as drug-addicted teenager Rue Bennett in HBO’s Euphoria. Her success came at the expense of Laura Linney (Ozark) and Killing Eve duo Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh.
There was a ‘three-peat’ for Julia Garner, as the New York-born starlet scooped her third Supporting Actress gong for her swansong turn as ill-fated money launderer Ruth Langmore in the final series of Netflix’s Ozark.
She triumphed in her category against the likes of Patricia Arquette (Severance), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul), and Succession duo J. Smith-Cameron and Sarah Snook.
On the comedy front, Apple TV’s Ted Lasso retained its dominance at the Emmys with four major wins, including the Outstanding Comedy Series honour ahead of Abbott Elementary, Hacks and Only Murders in the Building.
Once again, central star Jason Sudeikis secured the Lead Actor prize for his lauded turn as folksy football coach Ted Lasso, with his victory coming at the expense of Hollywood favourites Steve Martin and Martin Short for Only Murders in the Building.
Sudeikis’s success was mirrored by British co-star Brett Goldstein, as he took home Supporting Actor for the second year in a row for his reprised role as cantankerous ex-player-turned-assistant coach Roy Kent. Once again, the comedian performer used an expletive to close his speech to the humour of many.
There was also a repeat for Jean Smart, as she clinched her second successive Lead Actress gong for her returning role as veteran comedian Deborah Vance in the second series of HBO Max’s Hacks.
Despite losing out on that particular award, newcomer Quinta Brunson did manage a writing win for her work on the ABC comedy Abbott Elementary, while co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph became only the second black performer to win Supporting Actress for her performance as no-nonsense teacher Barbara Howard.
Finally, there was further joy for HBO as The White Lotus swept its way to five major awards in the limited series field.
The mystery satire saw off the likes of Dopesick and Pam & Tommy to land the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series prize, while showrunner Mike White celebrated double wins for his writing and directing.
Additionally, cast members Jennifer Coolidge and Murray Bartlett were victorious in the supporting acting categories, with their wins coming at the expense of multiple co-stars including Connie Britton, Sydney Sweeney and Steve Zahn.
In the lead categories, Amanda Seyfried overcame stern competition from Julia Garner (Inventing Anna) and Lily James (Pam & Tommy) to land Lead Actress for her portrayal of disgraced biotech entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu miniseries The Dropout.
Meanwhile, seasoned star Michael Keaton followed up his success at the Golden Globes earlier this year by clinching the Lead Actor prize for his role as a small-town doctor in Hulu’s Dopesick. Among those to miss out on the accolade included British trio Colin Firth (The Staircase), Andrew Garfield (Under the Banner of Heaven) and Himesh Patel (Station Eleven).
There was some consolation for the Brits as comedian John Oliver’s hit late-night talk show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver scored its SEVENTH successive win for Outstanding Variety Talk Series.
However, it was a night to forget for multiple programmes as Better Call Saul continued its barren run of Emmy losses while the likes of Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, Pam & Tommy, Severance and Yellowjackets all went home empty-handed.
There was a muted build-up to this year’s Emmys, with some pre-show festivities called off following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last week. Additionally, it was also the first full-scale ceremony to take place since the pandemic began in 2020.
