2022 BAFTA (TV) nominations: It’s a Sin and Help dominate while Stephen Graham scores double acting nods

After the fallout from Sunday’s ‘knockout’ Oscar ceremony, the focus for awards season has shifted back to British television through this year’s BAFTA TV nominations.

As expected, the leading frontrunner is It’s a Sin with a healthy eleven nods including Best Mini-Series. Written and created by Russell T. Davies, the programme follows a group of homosexual young men and their friends as they find themselves caught up in the AIDS crisis that struck Britain in the 1980s.

Five of the show’s cast have received nominations for their performances, with Years and Years singer Olly Alexander and co-star Lydia West both acknowledged for their leading roles as Ritchie Tozer and Jill Baxter. Additionally, Omari Douglas, Callum Scott Howells and David Carlyle are all in contention to win Best Supporting Actor for their respective appearances as Roscoe Babatunde, Colin Morris-Jones and Gregory.

Elsewhere, the powerful COVID-based drama Help received six nominations including Best Single Drama as well as acting nods for stars Jodie Comer, Stephen Graham and Cathy Tyson.

Jodie scores her fourth successive leading actress nomination for her performance as overburdened care worker Sarah while Graham and Tyson are acknowledged for their respective roles as Tony and Polly.

Graham is also in contention for his supporting role as prison guard Eric McNally in Time and will be looking to finally end his long wait for a first BAFTA win. Time also scored key mentions in Best Mini-Series, as well as another Best Actor nomination for Sean Bean.

Meanwhile, Kate Winslet receives her first television nomination at BAFTA for her performance as Detective Mare Sheehan in the acclaimed crime series Mare of Easttown. She contests the rest of the Best Actress category alongside Niamh Algar (Deceit) and Too Close duo Denise Gough and Emily Watson.

The Best Drama series line-up sees the coming-of-age drama In My Skin duke it out with three crime series in Manhunt: The Night Stalker, Unforgotten and Vigil.

Other key drama acting nominees include Céline Buckens (Showtrial), Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), Emily Mortimer (The Pursuit of Love), Jessica Plummer (The Girl Before), Hugh Quarshie (Stephen) and David Thewlis (Landscapers).

On the comedy front, the music-based sitcom We Are Lady Parts scored six nods including Best Scripted Comedy (alongside Alma’s Not Normal, Motherland and Stath Lets Flats) with leading star Anjana Vasan nominated for Best Female Comedy Performance.

Other standout names in the comedy line-ups include siblings Jamie and Natasia Demetriou (Stath Lets Flats) plus Aisling Bea (This Way Up), Steve Coogan (This Time with Alan Partridge), Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education), Joseph Gilgun (Brassic), Sophie Willan (Alma’s Not Normal) and last year’s Best Actress winner Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education).

There is also a posthumous Best Entertainment Performance nomination for the late comedian Sean Lock who is acknowledged for 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

As expected, there were a number of notable snubs made by this year’s nominations.

Despite the dominance of It’s a Sin, Keeley Hawes was surprisingly ignored for her role as Valerie Tozer. Additionally, Olivia Colman (Landscapers), Brian Cox (Succession), Gabrielle Creevy (In My Skin), Claire Foy (A Very British Scandal), Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso), Amy James-Kelly (Three Families), Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland), Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso), Sharlene Whyte (Stephen) and Sion Daniel Young (Deceit) were also overlooked.

The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade is set to host the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards ceremony for the third consecutive year as it returns to London’s Royal Festival Hall on 8 May. The BAFTA TV Craft Awards will take place on 24 April.
