After the fallout from Sunday’s ‘knockout’ Oscar ceremony, the focus for awards season has shifted back to British television through this year’s TV BAFTA nominations.
As expected, Channel 4’s It’s a Sin holds pole position with a healthy eleven nods, including a place on the Best Mini-Series shortlist.
Written and created by Russell T Davies, the fact-based drama follows a group of homosexual young men and their friends as they find themselves caught up in the AIDS crisis that struck Britain in the 1980s.
There are also five nominations for the programme’s talented cast Five of the show’s cast, with Years and Years singer Olly Alexander and co-star Lydia West both acknowledged for their leading roles as Ritchie Tozer and Jill Baxter.
Additionally, Omari Douglas, Callum Scott Howells and David Carlyle are all shortlisted together in the Best Supporting Actor category for their respective turns as Roscoe Babatunde, Colin Morris-Jones and Gregory.
Fellow Channel 4 production Help also garnered an impressive six nominations, including Best Single Drama as well as a hat-trick of acting nods for its Liverpudlian cast.
Once again, Jodie Comer scores her fourth consecutive Leading Actress nod for her powerful performance as overburdened care worker Sarah, while co-stars Stephen Graham and Cathy Tyson are acknowledged for their roles as care home residents Tony and Polly.
Graham is also in contention for his supporting turn as prison guard Eric McNally in BBC One’s Time, and will be looking to finally end his long wait for a first BAFTA win.
Co-star Sean Bean earns another Leading Actor nom for the prison-based drama series, which is also up for Best Mini-Series alongside Sky Atlantic’s Landscapers and ITV’s Stephen.
Elsewhere, Kate Winslet receives her first television nomination at BAFTA for her Golden Globe and Emmy-winning performance as Detective Mare Sheehan in the acclaimed HBO crime series Mare of Easttown.
She contests the rest of the Leading Actress category alongside Niamh Algar (Deceit) and Too Close duo Denise Gough and Emily Watson.
Meanwhile, the Best Drama Series line-up sees BBC duo In My Skin and Vigil duke it out with ITV crime dramas Manhunt: The Night Stalker, and Unforgotten.
Another major category sees the aforementioned Help joined in the Best Single Drama field by fellow Channel 4 effort I Am…Victoria, as well as BBC Two’s Together and the Sky Arts two-hander Death of England: Face to Face.
Former BAFTA winner Matthew Macfadyen earns a Supporting Actor nod for his popular role as Tom Wambsgans in HBO’s Succession, while the rest of the acting nominees are Samuel Adewunmi (You Don’t Know Me), Nonso Anozie (Sweet Tooth), Céline Buckens (Showtrial), Leah Harvey (Foundation), Emily Mortimer (The Pursuit of Love), Jessica Plummer (The Girl Before), Hugh Quarshie (Stephen), Tahirah Sharif (The Tower) and David Thewlis (Landscapers).
On the comedy front, Channel 4’s We Are Lady Parts holds frontrunner status with six nominations including Best Scripted Comedy, as well as a Female Comedy Performance nod for leading star Anjana Vasan.
Fellow Channel 4 series Stath Lets Flats also contests a strong Scripted Comedy line-up alongside BBC duo Alma’s Not Normal and Motherland.
In the case of Stath, siblings Jamie and Natasia Demetriou are both acknowledged for their roles alongside previous category winners Steve Coogan (This Time with Alan Partridge) and Aimee Lou Wood (Sex Education).
Aisling Bea (This Way Up), Rose Matafeo (Starstruck) and Sophie Willan (Alma’s Not Normal) are also in contention for the Female Comedy Performance prize, while Ncuti Gatwa (Sex Education), Joseph Gilgun (Brassic), Samson Kayo (Bloods) and disabled performer Tim Renkow (Jerk) make up the rest of the Male category.
Elsewhere, it’s a battle of BBC One vs. ITV in the Soap & Continuing Drama field, as medical dramas Casualty and Holby City fight it out with Coronation Street and Emmerdale.
Meanwhile, the newly-expanded International category sees HBO duo Mare of Easttown and Succession compete against Prime Video’s The Underground Railground and Netflix trio Call My Agent!, Lupin and Squid Game.
The late comedian Sean Lock receives a posthumous Entertainment Performance nomination for his appearances in the Channel 4 comedy panel show 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown with Alison Hammond (I Can See Your Voice), Graham Norton (The Graham Norton Show) and Big Zuu (Big Zuu’s Big Eats) among the other nominees.
The other standout programmes in contention for BAFTA recognition are Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, The Chase, Freddie Mercury: The Final Act, Gogglebox, The Lateish Show with Mo Gilligan, Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, The Ranganation, and Uprising.
Finally, the nominees for Virgin TV’s Must-See Moment include Adele’s unexpected reunion with her former teacher in An Audience with Adele, Ant and Dec’s dig at Downing Street’s lockdown parties on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, and Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice’s silent dance to “Symphony” on Strictly Come Dancing.
Once again, comedian actor Richard Ayoade will host the 68th BAFTA Television Awards ceremony for a third consecutive year when it returns to London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 8 May.
