It was another tremendous evening for the BBC as multiple programmes celebrated major success during last night’s BAFTA Television Awards.
On the dramatic side of things, BBC One’s Peaky Blinders saw off major competition from The Crown and Line of Duty to win the Drama Series accolade.
The crime series has gone from strength to strength over four series, and finally ended its long wait for a first BAFTA triumph.
However, a string of fact-based dramas were among those to taste victory in the main categories, with BBC One’s Three Girls scoring two key wins.
The programme, which explores the events surrounding the Rochdale child sex abuse ring, clinched the Miniseries prize, while young star Molly Windsor overcame strong competition from Claire Foy (The Crown), Sinéad Keenan (Little Boy Blue) and Thandie Newton (Line of Duty) to take home Leading Actress for her performance as abuse victim Holly Winshaw.
Additionally, BBC Three’s Murdered for Being Different, which dramatises the killing of goth teenager Sophie Lancaster, secured the Single Drama prize, while Irish performer Brían F. O’Byrne was awarded the Supporting Actor accolade for his portrayal of Steve Jones, the grieving father of murdered Liverpudlian youngster Rhys Jones in the ITV crime drama Little Boy Blue.
Elsewhere, Sean Bean nabbed the Leading Actor gong for his performance as troubled priest Father Michael Kerrigan in the BBC One drama Broken, with victory coming at the expense of the late Tim Pigott-Smith (King Charles III).
Meanwhile, Vanessa Kirby reigned supreme in the Supporting Actress category after persevering for her portrayal of Royal Family member Princess Margaret in Netflix’s The Crown. This win finally assures the historical drama of its first major BAFTA after a couple of prior successes in the technical categories.
In the comedy fields, BBC Three’s This Country secured two key wins, including the prestigious Scripted Comedy prize.
Furthermore, leading star and co-creator Daisy May Cooper won the Female Comedy Performance gong for her breakthrough role as lazy Cotswolds resident Kerry Mucklowe ahead of the likes of Sian Gibson (Peter Kay’s Car Share) and Anna Maxwell Martin (Motherland).
Meanwhile, Toby Jones finally ended his long wait for a BAFTA success after clinching Male Comedy Performance for his returning role as seasoned detectorist Lance Stater in BBC Four’s Detectorists.
Elsewhere, BBC’s Casualty beat ITV duo Coronation Street and Emmerdale to land its first Soap & Continuing Drama prize in eleven years, while HBO’s Big Little Lies added another award to its trophy cabinet by winning the International category.
Irish chat show host Graham Norton took home the Entertainment Performance accolade for his presenting of The Graham Norton Show, while ITV’s hit series Love Island won its first ever BAFTA for Reality and Constructed Factual.
The other programmes to land notable BAFTAs included Murder in Successville (Comedy and Comedy Entertainment Programme), Britain’s Got Talent (Entertainment Programme), Ambulance (Factual), Rio Ferdinand: Being Mum and Dad (Single Documentary), Cruising with Jane McDonald (Feature) and The Grand National (Sport).
Finally, the BBC One nature documentary Blue Planet II enjoyed public support after winning Virgin TV’s Must-See Moment for the touching sequence where a mother pilot whale refuses to let go of her dead calf with victory coming ahead of the likes of Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and One Love Manchester.
