The nominations for this year’s Oscar are finally here, and it comes as no surprise to see one particular film stand out.
As anticipated, the romantic musical La La Lead leads the way with a commanding fourteen nods, including the prestigious Best Picture accolade.
The film, which focuses on a whirlwind romance between a struggling jazz musician and an aspiring actress, also secured acting mentions for leading stars Ryan Gosling (as Sebastian) and Emma Stone (as Mia) as well as directing and writing nods for filmmaker Damien Chazelle.
Furthermore, the musical becomes only the third film in Oscars history to receive fourteen noms along with previous Best Picture winners All About Eve (1950) and Titanic (1997).
The sci-fi drama Arrival and the coming-of-age drama Moonlight also performed admirably with eight nods apiece, including a place on the Best Picture shortlist.
Though Arrival scored a Best Director nom for auteur Denis Villevenueve, leading star Amy Adams was surprisingly snubbed in the Best Actress category.
In the case of Moonlight, filmmaker Barry Jenkins claimed double nods for his writing and directing, while cast members Naomie Harris (as Paula) and Mahershala Ali (as Juan) are respectively acknowledged in the Best Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor line-ups.
Elsewhere, there was a strong showing for the indie drama Manchester by the Sea as it landed six nominations, including Best Picture, as well as writing and directing noms for filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan.
The film also scored a hat-trick of acting nods for its cast, with Casey Affleck strongly tipped to win the Best Actor category for his role as troubled Boston janitor Lee Chandler. Additionally, co-star Michelle Williams (as Randi Chandler) is up for Best Supporting Actress, while newcomer Lucas Hedges (as Patrick Chandler) earns a surprise Best Supporting Actor nod.
Meanwhile, Mel Gibson’s war epic Hacksaw Ridge and the factual drama Lion also received six Oscar nominations each, with Gibson landing a Best Director nod for the first time since winning for Braveheart in 1996!
The rest of the Best Picture shortlist is completed by the family drama Fences (four noms), the crime thriller Hell or High Water (four noms) and the NASA-based factual drama Hidden Figures (three noms).
In the Best Actress field, the great Meryl Streep earns a remarkable twentieth(!) Oscar nomination for her portrayal of deaf heiress Florence Foster Jenkins in the factual comedy-drama Florence Foster Jenkins.
However, she faces stern competition in that category from Natalie Portman (as First Lady Jackie Kennedy) in Jackie, French actress Isabelle Huppert (as Michèle Leblanc) in Elle, and Irish star Ruth Negga (as Mildred Loving) in Loving.
Meanwhile, British star Andrew Garfield finally lands his first Oscar nom for his role as war hero Desmond T. Doss in Hacksaw Ridge and will be competing in the Best Actor line-up alongside Viggo Mortensen (as Ben Cash) in Captain Fantastic and previous category winner Denzel Washington (as Troy Maxson) in Fences.
In the supporting fields, Viola Davis is looking to finally land her first gold statuette after earning a Best Supporting Actress nod for her performance as Rose Maxson in Fences, with Nicole Kidman (as Sue Brierley) in Lion and Octavia Spencer (as Dorothy Vaughan) in Hidden Figures among her rival nominees.
The Best Supporting Actor line-up sees British performer Dev Patel (as Saroo Brierley) in contention for Lion, as he finds himself up against veteran Jeff Bridges (as Marcus Hamilton) in Hell or Hell Water and surprise nominee Michael Shannon (as Bobby Andes) in Nocturnal Animals.
Remarkably, Shannon’s co-star Aaron Taylor-Johnson failed to make the cut despite a shock win at the Golden Globes a fortnight ago.
Elsewhere, pop star Justin Timberlake receives his first Oscar nod for his hit song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from the hit animation Trolls while a variety of blockbusters are nominated in the technical categories including Deepwater Horizon, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, The Jungle Book, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Star Trek Beyond and Suicide Squad.
The Best Animated Film line-up sees Disney’s Moana and Zootopia battle it out with Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini and The Red Turtle while Sweden’s Man of Ove, Iran’s The Salesman and Germany’s Toni Erdmann are among the international features in contention for the Best Foreign Language Film accolade.
Finally, a strong Best Documentary Feature is contested by the likes of the O. J. Simpson epic O. J.: Made in America, the Disney-themed Life, Animated, and race-relation films 13th, and I am Not Your Negro.
Once again, the Academy left some Oscar fans disappointed as performances from Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Tom Hanks (Sully) and Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures) were overlooked while films like Captain America: Civil War, Deadpool, Finding Dory, Live By Night, Miss Sloane, Patriots’ Day, Sing Street, The Tower and The Witness were completely shut out.
The 89th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday 26 February, with comedian Jimmy Kimmel on hosting duties for the first time.
