It was another memorable evening for the stars of television as they all came together to celebrate the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards.
For the second year in a row, HBO’s Game of Thrones triumphed over all comers with three major wins, including the coveted Outstanding Drama Series gong. The fantasy epic saw off competition from the likes of The Americans, Better Call Saul and Mr. Robot to win the big prize as well as writing and directing gongs for the acclaimed ‘Battle of the Bastards’ episode.
Furthermore, the series has now surpassed Frasier as the fictional television programme with the most Emmy Awards, with 38 wins across its six series so far.
Elsewhere, the lead acting winners brought two picks from cult programmes as Rami Malek saw off competition from the likes of Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Kevin Spacey (House of Cards) to land Lead Actor for his performance as troubled computer hacker Elliot Alderson in the USA cyber thriller Mr. Robot.
In the case of Lead Actress, Tatiana Maslany overcame previous category winners Claire Danes (Homeland) and Viola Davis (How to Get Away with Murder) to land the gong for her lauded turn as various clones in the BBC America sci-fi series Orphan Black.
Meanwhile, an absent Dame Maggie Smith snared a third Emmy win for her supporting role as Violet Crawley in ITV’s Downton Abbey, with her victory coming at the expense of Game of Thrones trio Emilia Clarke, Lena Heady and Maisie Williams.
A more surprising result came in the Supporting Actor field as Australian absentee Ben Mendelsohn took home the award for his turn as Danny Rayburn in the Netflix crime drama Bloodline ahead of the likes of Jonathan Banks (Better Call Saul) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).
On the comedy front, HBO’s political satire Veep scored a second successive win for Outstanding Comedy Series ahead of the likes of Master of None, Modern Family and Transparent.
More significantly, leading star Julia Louis-Dreyfus established a new record of five straight victories in Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her lauded role as narcissistic US President Selina Meyer.
There was also follow-up success for Jeffrey Tambor as he clinched back-to-back Lead Actor Emmys for his returning role as trans woman Maura Pfefferman in Prime Video’s Transparent. He saw off competition from Aziz Ansari who had the consolation of picking up Best Writing for his work on Netflix’s Master of None.
Meanwhile, Kate McKinnon enjoyed a welcoming win in the Supporting Actress category for playing multiple characters in the NBC sketch comedy Saturday Night Live while seasoned star Louie Anderson saw off the likes of Ty Burrell (Modern Family) and Tony Hale (Veep) to bag a surprise Supporting Actor victory for his role as Christine Baskets in FX’s Baskets.
Finally, FX’s The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story dominated the limited series field with multiple wins, including the coveted Outstanding Limited Series accolade ahead of fellow FX series Fargo and the BBC thriller The Night Manager.
The crime-based miniseries also scored a hat-trick of wins for acting, with Sarah Paulson finally claiming a first Emmy triumph for her lauded portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark.
Additionally, Courtney B. Vance saw off strong competition from British trio Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock: The Abominable Bride), Idris Elba (Luther) and Tom Hiddleston (The Night Manager) to win Lead Actor for his performance as defence lawyer Johnny Cochran while co-star Sterling K. Brown took home Supporting Actor for playing co-prosecutor Christopher Darden.
For the second year in a row, Regina King celebrated success in the Supporting Actress category after defeating the likes of Kathy Bates (American Horror Story: Hotel) and Olivia Colman (The Night Manager) to prevail for her role in the ABC anthology series American Crime.
Despite multiple losses in the main category, The Night Manager did enjoy a consolation accolade for Susanne Bier in the directing field, while the Sherlock installment The Abominable Bride won Outstanding Television Movie ahead of All the Way and Luther.
As to be expected, a number of multi-nominated programmes ended the night without an award including All the Way, The Americans, Better Call Saul, Black-ish, Fargo, Homeland, House of Cards, and Silicon Valley
