Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to re-enter the Matrix!
Following some ongoing rumours, it has finally been confirmed that a fourth Matrix film is in the works with a trio of key personnel back on board.
The latest installment of the hit sci-fi series will see original stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprise their respective roles as heroes Neo and Trinity. This may come as a surprise to some people given the fact that both characters died in the previous film The Matrix Revolutions (2003). However stranger things have happened on the big-screen!
Additionally, original director Lana Wachowski is set to helm the new outing though it’s unknown whether her sister Lilly will be involved. The same applies to actor Laurence Fishburne who played the iconic role of Morpheus in the trilogy.
On the upcoming film, Warner Bros Studios boss Toby Emmerich said:
“We could not be more excited to be re-entering The Matrix with Lana.
“Lana is a true visionary – a singular and original creative filmmaker – and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in The Matrix universe.”
Lana also offered her thoughts on the return of the Matrix series:
“Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now.
“I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”
The news comes on the twentieth anniversary of when The Matrix (1999) was released in cinemas. The film was a mega-hit with critics and audiences and later clinched four Oscar wins (including Best Visual Effects). However there was less enthusiasm for the sequels Matrix Reloaded (2002) and Revolutions despite both making big money at the box-office.
As to when the fourth film is released remains to be seen. All that’s left to say now is….
