Taika Waititi directs and stars as an idiotic Adolf Hitler in Jojo Rabbit trailer

Over a short space of time, Taika Waititi has built a strong gathering of fans following his work on the New Zealand-based adventure Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) and the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Ragnorak (2017).

The Kiwi-born director is now bringing his signature style of humour to his next project which is entitled Jojo Rabbit. Cited as a potential Oscar contender, the film satirises one of the darkest periods in human history and also features some familiar faces in its cast.

Following the release of a teaser last month, a new full-length trailer has premiered and promises a mixture of witty laughs and emotional complexity.

Set during World War II, the historical satire focuses on a lonely German boy whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother is hiding a young Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Waititi), Jojo must confront his blind nationalism.

Newcomer Roman Griffin Davis plays the role of youngster Jojo Betzler while the rest of the ensemble cast includes Thomasin McKenzie (The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, Leave No Trace), Oscar-winner Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Vice), Scarlett Johansson (Lost in Translation, The Avengers: Endgame), Rebel Wilson (Bridesmaids, Pitch Perfect trilogy), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones, John Wick) and Stephen Merchant (Logan, Fighting with My Family).

Jojo Rabbit will be released in the UK on 3 January 2020.
