Back in July last year, Disney made a big call in firing director James Gunn from making a third Guardians of the Galaxy film after a series of decade-old tweets that joked about rape and abuse surfaced.
This ultimately led to a major backlash which included an open letter penned by Guardians stars Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista and pleading for Gunn to be reinstated.
Well Marvel fans, “groot news” for y’all. It has been officially confirmed that Gunn will return to direct the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 following reports that he had won over Disney chairman Alan Horn with his sincerity and regret about the historic tweets.
Gunn shared his delight about returning in an emotional tweet written last night.
“I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months.
I am always learning and will continue to work at being the best human being I can be. I deeply appreciate Disney’s decision and I am excited to continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all. I have been and continue to be incredibly humbled by your love and support. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Love to you all.”
Coincidentally, Gunn is currently working on another comic-book film albeit through DC Comics after he was recently hired to direct the upcoming anti-hero sequel Suicide Squad 2. Once he finishes work on that, he will then begin production on the third Guardians for which he has already written a script.
This means a long wait for us fans with 2021 looking a likely year for Vol. 3 to be released!
