Hello, and welcome to the first edition of the 2024 OSCAS (On-Screen Community Awards)!

Once again, it has been another exhilarating year of television that continues to provide plenty of quality across different channels (including BBC and ITV) and streaming services (including Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+).

The past twelve months saw Toby Jones and his companions embark on a defiant quest for justice over the Post Office Scandal in ITV’s critically-acclaimed miniseries Mr Bates vs. the Post Office, while YouTube star Lucia Keskin became a new TV favourite with her breakthrough BBC Three sitcom Things You Should Have Done.

On the subject of ‘new’, we were also introduced to a number of stories concerning various characters, including an aristocratic family caught up in the weed business, as well as a puzzle-solving detective, a courageous female outlaw, an overburdened nurse, two mismatched brothers, and a group of Black British superheroes.

There was a Mersey feel to television this year as Martin Freeman reprised his acclaimed role as stressed Liverpudlian copper Chris Carson in the second series of BBC’s The Responder, while scouse youths took centre stage in both the Channel 4 mystery The Gathering, and the filthy ITV sitcom G’wed.

Meanwhile, real-life figures Delia Balmer, Griselda Blanco, Benjamin Franklin, Joan Hannington, Lali Sokolov, and Mary Villiers saw their stories given the small-screen treatment.

Additionally, the antics of the Price sisters and the Menéndez brothers were explored, alongside true events concerning the 100th Bomb Group and their heroism during World War II and the investigation surrounding the murder of teenager Reena Virk.

Elsewhere, Richard Gadd bravely brought his experiences of being stalked to life in the powerful Netflix series Baby Reindeer, while Disney+ found success with the launch of new programmes including the raunchy Rivals, and the multi-Emmy-winning remake of the historical drama Shōgun.

Meanwhile, Larry David brought his long-running sitcom Curb Your Enthusiasm to a pretty, pretty, pretty good end while the Star Wars universe endured disappointment with the cancelled spin-off series The Acolyte.

As of now, a number of beloved characters are still being followed beyond 2024 including Chef “Carmy” Berzatto, Vinnie O’Neill, Deborah Vance, Wrexham FC, the staff of Abbott Elementary, Pierrepoint, and Slough House, and couples Nick and Charlie, and Gordon and Ashley.
