2022 Emmy Award nominations: HBO pair Succession and The White Lotus lead the pack

The nominations for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced.

After a hiatus from last year’s ceremony, the third series of HBO’s Succession has taken centre stage with a sublime 25 nominations, including the coveted Outstanding Drama Series accolade.

Seven cast members from the family drama are in contention for acting gongs, with Lead Actor once again contested by central stars Brian Cox (Logan Roy) and 2020 winner Jeremy Strong (Kendall Roy).

Additionally, Sarah Snook and first-time recipient J. Smith-Cameron lock horns in Supporting Actress while male trio Nicholas Braun, Kieran Culkin and Matthew Macfadyen square off in the Supporting Actor field.

Showrunner Jesse Armstrong is looking to make it a hat-trick of successes in the writing category, while three of the show’s directors are nominated for their directing, including British helmer Mark Mylod.

Remarkably, none of last year’s drama nominees are in contention for the main prize, with the likes of former victors The Crown and The Handmaid’s Tale sitting out the 2022 awards.

Instead, returning programmes Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Stranger Things and the final series of Ozark are shortlisted alongside newcomers Severance, Squid Game and Yellowjackets.

Of those new drama contenders, Apple TV’s Severance and Netflix’s hit Korean thriller Squid Game fared well with sixteen nods apiece, including four for acting.

In the case of Severance, the dystopian thriller receives a Lead Actor nod for main star Adam Scott while co-stars Patricia Arquette, John Turturro and Christopher Walken are up for the supporting prizes.

Additionally, Hollywood actor-turned-director Ben Stiller receives a first Emmy nomination for his work behind the camera.

Squid Game, which follows a group of cash-strapped contestants who participate in a deadly contest, becomes the first non-English programme to receive an Outstanding Drama Series nomination.

Furthermore, Lee Jung-jae becomes the first Korean actor to be nominated in the Lead Actor category while co-stars HoYeon Jung, Park Hae-soo andO Yeong-su are acknowledged for their supporting turns.

Elsewhere, 2020 Lead Actress winner Zendaya will look to defend her crown after receiving another nod for her reprised role as drug-addicted student Rue Bennett in HBO’s Euphoria. Her competition in the category includes first-time nominee Melanie Lynskey (Yellowjackets) and Killing Eve duo Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh.

Despite a diverse final series, Netflix’s Ozark bagged multiple mentions, including three for its cast members, with Jason Bateman and Laura Linney once again in contention for lead Emmys. Additionally, co-star Julia Garner is seeking to make it a hat-trick of successes in Supporting Actress after making her swansong appearance as the feisty Ruth Langmore.

One of the most popular nominations of the day sees Rhea Seehorn finally land her first Emmy nod for her acclaimed supporting turn as Kim Wexler in AMC’s Better Call Saul.

The rest of the standout drama contenders include Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), Christina Ricci (Yellowjackets), Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria), and Billy Crudrup (The Morning Show).

Meanwhile, Hulu’s mystery caper Only Murders in the Building is shortlisted for multiple awards, including double Lead Actor nods for veteran stars and long-time friends Steve Martin and Martin Short. However, co-star Selena Gomez is overlooked for her role in the hit sleuth series.

ABC’s Abbott Elementary, which follows the staff of a predominantly black Philadelphia school, is also in contention for major recognition, with creator and central star Quinta Brunson up for both Lead Actress and Outstanding Writing.

Additionally, fellow cast members Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph, and Tyler James Williams are up for the supporting honours.

Elsewhere, last year’s Lead Actress victor Jean Smart is back in contention for her lauded role as seasoned comedian Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s Hacks while fellow ex-acting winners Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Donald Glover (Atlanta), Bill Hader (Barry), Alex Borstein (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live), Tony Shalhoub (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Henry Winkler (Barry) are also looking for repeated successes.

Finally, the limited series field is led by HBO’s The White Lotus with a hefty twenty nominations including the newly-renamed Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series accolade where it faces off against Netflix’s Inventing Anna and Hulu trio Dopesick, The Dropout and Pam & Tommy.

The mystery satire receives EIGHT acting nods for its talented ensemble including five in supporting for actresses Jennifer Coolidge, Connie Britton, Alexandra Daddario, Natasha Rothwell, and double nominee Sydney Sweeney (who is also nominated in the drama line-ups for Euphoria).

Additionally, male co-stars Murray Bartlett, Jake Lacy and Steve Zahn are all shortlisted in the Supporting Actor category with Bartlett the favourite to prevail.

Elsewhere, Hulu’s factual miniseries Dopesick is also up for multiple acting awards with central star Michael Keaton in contention in Lead Actor while Kaitlyn Dever, Will Poulter and Peter Sarsgaard are among the fellow cast members up for the supporting gongs.

Keaton faces stern competition in the Lead Actor category from the likes of British trio Colin Firth (The Staircase), Andrew Garfield (Under the Banner of Heaven) and Himesh Patel (Station Eleven) while Julia Garner (Inventing Anna) and Amanda Seyfried (The Dropout) battle it out in a mostly fact-based Lead Actress line-up.
