The origins of Tony Soprano are explored in trailer for The Sopranos prequel The Many Saints of Newark

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s almost time for turkey sandwiches.

It goes without saying that The Sopranos is one of the most beloved and acclaimed television series of all time. Fourteen years after its controversial (yet memorable!) ending, the multi-Emmy award-winning programme is returning with an upcoming prequel that charts the origins of one of the greatest television characters of all time.

Entitled The Many Saints of Newark, the film’s action-filled trailer has finally landed and gives us a glimpse of some old favourites in their earlier years.

Helmed by Alan Taylor and written by Sopranos creator David Chase, the plot follows a young Tony Soprano as he grows up in one of the most tumultuous eras in Newark’s history. Over time, he becomes a man just as rival gangsters begin to rise up and challenge the all-powerful DiMeo crime family’s hold over the increasingly race-torn city.

Michael Gandolfini (The Deuce, Cherry) steps into the shoes of a young Tony in a role that was previously played to perfection by his late, great father James.

Additionally, the rest of the crime film’s solid cast include Alessandro Nivola (American Hustle, Selma) as a young Richard ‘Dickie’ Moltisanti, Jon Bernthal (The Wolf of Wall Street, The Punisher) as a young Johnny Boy Soprano, Corey Stoll (House of Cards, Ant-Man) as a young Junior Soprano, Billy Magnussen (Bridge of Spies, Game Night) as a young Paulie ‘Walnuts’ Gualtieri, John Magaro (The Big Short, First Cow) as a young Silvio Dante, Mattea Conforti (Gotham, Power) as a young Janice Soprano and Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga (The Departed, Bates Motel) as a young Livia Soprano.

There are also appearances from other recognisable names including Tony winner Leslie Odom Jr. (Hamilton, One Night in Miami) and Emmy winner Ray Liotta (Goodfellas, Cop Land).

The Many Saints of Newark is currently scheduled for release in the UK on 22 October.
