The origins of Star Wars hero Han Solo are explored in official trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story

With Disney continuing to earn massive profits from the new Star Wars sequels, the studio have also found time to invest in a film that focuses on the backstory of one of the most beloved characters of the entire franchise.

While the (somewhat maligned) prequels focused on the histories of memorable individuals like Darth Vader, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, fans had always wondered about the past exploits of cocky smuggler Han Solo who was famously played in the original trilogy by Harrison Ford.

But after a long and difficult production that saw a change of director and many re-shoots, the early adventures of Han are being explored in the upcoming origin film Solo: A Star Wars Story.

With the spinoff due out in May, an official trailer has finally been unveiled and gives us a first look at Alden Ehrenreich (Beautiful Creatures, Hail, Caesar!) in his breakthrough role as Han.

The plot centres on Han and his wookie companion Chewbacca prior to their adventures with the Rebellion as they find themselves being picked for a crucial mission by Han’s mentor.

Away from her starring role as the ‘Mother of Dragons’ in HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones, British beauty Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) co-stars as Qi’Ra, an admirer of Han who accompanies him on his mission.

Donald Glover (Atlanta, Spider-Man: Homecoming) takes on the part of a young Lando Calrissian with additional support coming from Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games series, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Thandie Newton (Crash, Westworld), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Goodbye Christopher Robin) and Paul Bettany (Iron Man trilogy, The Avengers: Infinity War).

Oscar-winning director Ron Howard (Apollo 13, Cinderella Man, Rush) helms the film having taken over the project from original filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller who were relieved of their duties back in June. Additionally, the script is penned by veteran Star Wars screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) and his son Jon.

Solo: A Star Wars Story will be released in cinemas worldwide on May 25th 2018.
