The On-Screen Community’s final 2022 BAFTA TV predictions

This Sunday sees the stars of the silver screen come together for the 2022 British Academy Television Awards.

From It’s a Sin and We Are Lady Parts to Help and An Audience with Adele, there’s no denying how competitive this year’s contenders will be.

Check out my winner predictions below!

BEST DRAMA SERIES

IN MY SKIN
MANHUNT: THE NIGHT STALKER
UNFORGOTTEN
VIGIL

WILL WIN?IN MY SKIN – Kayleigh Llewellyn’s touching comedic drama scored well with critics and is easily the strongest of this year’s nominees.

SHOULD WIN?IN MY SKIN – The recent Best Writer: Drama success should be enough to see it home and cap off a memorable journey for Llewellyn.

IGNORED?CRIME – The Britbox-produced detective series was an unlikely hit with critics and audiences and is set to return for a second run next year.

BEST MINI-SERIES

IT’S A SIN
LANDSCAPERS
STEPHEN
TIME

WILL WIN?IT’S A SIN – The acclaimed series has been the most-talked-about UK programme of the past sixteen months and deserves the biggest plaudits on the night. La!

SHOULD WIN?IT’S A SIN – Despite Landscapers performing well with the craft awards, there’s no denying how timely Russell T. Davies’s hit programme was.

IGNORED?THREE FAMILIES – Given the powerful subject matter, it’s a crime that the abortion-based mini-series was completely ignored by BAFTA.

BEST SINGLE DRAMA

DEATH OF ENGLAND: FACE TO FACE
HELP
I AM VICTORIA
TOGETHER

WILL WIN?HELP – Jack Thorne’s devastating COVID drama left viewers floored and outraged about the failings of the UK government and its mistreatment of care homes during the pandemic.

SHOULD WIN?HELP – Having the most nominations certainly ‘helps’ its chances, but an upset from I Am Victoria could possibly happen.

IGNORED?LIGHTS UP: HARM – The televised adaptation of the tense monologue didn’t attract a big audience, but the reviews were solid enough. Plus, Leanne Best was tremendous throughout!

BEST LEADING ACTRESS

Niamh Algar, DECEIT
Jodie Comer, HELP
Denise Gough, TOO CLOSE
Emily Watson, TOO CLOSE
Lydia West, IT’S A SIN
Kate Winslet, MARE OF EASTTOWN

WILL WIN?Jodie Comer – The Liverpudlian actress produced her strongest role on-screen yet as the exhausted carer pushed to her limit in Jack Thorne’s topical drama. A second win in three years would be fully deserved!

SHOULD WIN?Jodie Comer – The nightshift sequence and her anti-government rant in the climax are too good to ignore. Alternatively, Lydia West and Kate Winslet would be welcoming choices for this gong too!

IGNORED?Olivia Colman (LANDSCAPERS) – Since her Oscar-winning success in 2018, Olivia has been overlooked by BAFTA for both the film and television awards. While her portrayal of Susan Edwards wasn’t her strongest performance, it still would have made sense to nominate her, given Landscaper’s impressive haul elsewhere. The likes of Gabrielle Creevy (IN MY SKIN), Claire Foy (A VERY BRITISH SCANDAL), Suranne Jones (I AM VICTORIA) and Sharlene Whyte (Stephen) can also count themselves unlucky to be overlooked here.

BEST LEADING ACTOR

Samuel Adewunmi, YOU DON’T KNOW ME
Olly Alexander, IT’S A SIN
Sean Bean, TIME
Stephen Graham, HELP
Hugh Quarshie, STEPHEN
David Thewlis, LANDSCAPERS

WILL WIN?Olly Alexander – The Years and Years singer showed great dramatic chops with his emotional turn as Richie and has the following (and programme) to help him prevail.

SHOULD WIN?Stephen Graham – While Help wasn’t his strongest performance, the Liverpool actor is well overdue for a BAFTA. Plus, there’s also the possibility of a win in supporting too!

IGNORED?Brian Cox (SUCCESSION) – With performances from American-based shows now eligible for these awards, you’d think BAFTA would want to recognise Cox’s legendary portrayal of Logan Roy in the hit HBO series.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Céline Buckens, SHOWTRIAL
Leah Harvey, FOUNDATION
Emily Mortimer, THE PURSUIT OF LOVE
Jessica Plummer, THE GIRL BEFORE
Tahirah Sharif, THE TOWER
Cathy Tyson, HELP

WILL WIN?Jessica Plummer – Her emotional turn as a sexual assault survivor should garner her votes despite her programme’s underwhelming reviews.

SHOULD WIN? – Céline Buckens – While she should really have been nominated in lead, the young British actress was mesmerising as the arrogant and entitled student accused of murder.

IGNORED?Amy James-Kelly (THREE FAMILIES) – Understandably, a lot of people are upset by Keeley Hawes’ shock snub for It’s a Sin. However, Amy James-Kelly was just as devastating in the powerful mini-series and captured the angst and trauma of a young mother-to-be facing a difficult decision. Both actresses would have been far more deserving of a nod than the very brief turn given by Help’s Cathy Tyson!

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Nonso Azonzie, SWEET TOOTH
David Carlyle, IT’S A SIN
Omari Douglas, IT’S A SIN
Stephen Graham, TIME
Callum Scott Howells, IT’S A SIN
Matthew Macfadyen, SUCCESSION

WILL WIN?Callum Scott Howells – The Welsh starlet broke hearts with his tragic turn as the ill-fated Colin and would be a worthy choice.

SHOULD WIN?Matthew Macfadyen – While he already has a BAFTA to his name, the British actor enjoyed his best series yet as the power-hungry son-in-law Tom Wambsgans.

IGNORED?Sion Daniel Young (DECEIT) – His creepy turn as wrongly-accused murderer Colin Stagg was impressive, yet BAFTA opted to overlook the Welsh starlet.

BEST SCRIPTED COMEDY

ALMA’S NOT NORMAL
MOTHERLAND
STATH LETS FLATS
WE ARE LADY PARTS

WILL WIN?WE ARE LADY PARTS – The music-based sitcom has the momentum here after scoring three craft wins. However, Alma’s Not Normal should be a strong alternative.

SHOULD WIN?MOTHERLAND – Despite no love elsewhere, the BBC comedy had its best series yet and was hugely popular during lockdown.

IGNORED?SEX EDUCATION – The hit Netflix series garnered a number of nominations only to miss out on an important nod here.

BEST FEMALE COMEDY PERFORMANCE

Aisling Bea, THIS WAY UP
Natasia Demetriou, STATH LETS FLATS
Rose Matafeo, STARSTRUCK
Anjana Vasan, WE ARE LADY PARTS
Sophie Willan, ALMA’S NOT NORMAL
Aimee Lou Wood, SEX EDUCATION

WILL WIN?Sophie Willan – Like Phoebe Waller-Bridge before her, it feels right to see the multitasking Bolton star take home the prize after missing out on Best Writer: Comedy.

SHOULD WIN?Anjana Vasan – The Indian-born actress has the advantage of being part of this year’s most nominated sitcom and was terrific throughout.

IGNORED?Anna Maxwell Martin (MOTHERLAND) – Her riotous turn as long-suffering mother Julia should have helped her land a comeback nomination.

BEST MALE COMEDY PERFORMANCE

Steve Coogan, THIS TIME WITH ALAN PARTRIDGE
Jamie Demetriou, STATH LETS FLATS
Ncuti Gatwa, SEX EDUCATION
Joseph Gilgun, BRASSIC
Samson Kayo, BLOODS
Tim Renkow, JERK

WILL WIN?Ncuti Gatwa – While his character Eric was underutilised in Sex Education’s third series, the Rwanda-born starlet is seen as overdue for this award.

SHOULD WIN?Joseph Gilgun – On the subject of overdue, Gilgun deserves to win here for producing his strongest turn yet as bipolar-suffering thief Vinny O’Neil.

IGNORED?Brett Goldstein (TED LASSO) – His iconic portrayal of Roy “F***ing” Kent was ignored despite his recent Emmy success.

VIRGIN MEDIA’S MUST-SEE MOMENT

AN AUDIENCE WITH ADELE (Adele is surprised by the teacher who changed her life)
I’M A CELEBRITY… GET ME OUT OF HERE! (Ant and Dec dig at Downing Street’s lockdown parties)
IT’S A SIN (Colin’s devastating AIDS diagnosis)
RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE UK (‘UK Hun?’ – Bimini’s verse)
SQUID GAME (Red Light, Green Light game)
STRICTLY COME DANCING (Rose and Giovanni’s silent dance to ‘Symphony’)

WILL WIN?AN AUDIENCE WITH ADELE – Her star power and the programme’s success should garner plenty of votes from audiences.

SHOULD WIN?IT’S A SIN – One of several powerful moments that left audiences devastated throughout.

IGNORED?HELP (Nightshift sequence) – One of the most intense scenes in British television to date.
