The apes rise against the human race in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer

2011 produced one of the unlikely box-office hits of the year in the form of the primate reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes which unsurprisingly led to the making of a sequel entitled Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

But despite the absence of original director Rupert Wyatt and stars James Franco (Will Rodman) and Freida Pinto (Caroline Aranha), the new film does see Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong) return as the ape leader Caesar.

The first trailer for the dark-looking sequel was released earlier today.

Directed this time around by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), the film shows Caesar (Serkis) leading the ape’s uprising against the human race following the events of the previous outing.

With Franco and Pinto no longer involved, the sequel features a new-look cast including Jason Clarke (Lawless, Zero Dark Thirty), Keri Russell (Waitress, The Americans), Judy Greer (The Descendents, Carrie), Toby Kebbell (Dead Man’s Shoes, War Horse) and Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy).

The film will be released in cinemas on July 11th 2014.
