Marvel’s band of superheroes are finally set to be joined by their web-slinging compatriot Spider-Man as part of their cinematic universe.
A deal has been brokered between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Entertainment which will allow the much-loved character to appear alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk and Thor in future outings.
The red-coloured superhero will star in an upcoming Marvel film though it is not known which one it will be. Marvel President Kevin Feige will then produce a new Spider-Man film which will be released in cinemas on July 28th 2017.
Despite the new deal, Sony Pictures will continue to finance and have creative control over the future Spider-Man films. However it has been reported that current Peter Parker / Spider-Man actor Andrew Garfield will NOT be reprising his role from the recent Amazing Spider-Man films.
On the exciting news, Walt Disney Company chairman and CEO Bob Iger said:
“Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”
Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Michael Lynton then added:
“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man. This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”
The turn of events means that Disney (who own Marvel Studios) are rescheduling the release dates for some of the upcoming Marvel films. This includes Thor: Ragnorak from July 28th 2017 to November 3rd 2017 and Black Panther from November 3rd 2017 to July 6th 2018.
