Capote actor Philip Seymour Hoffman dies aged 46

Philip Seymour Hoffman, the multi award-winning actor of films like Boogie Nights, Capote and The Master, has died at the age of 46.

US reports revealed that he had died from a suspected drug overdose at his home in Manhattan earlier this evening with New York police investigating the shock death.

Last year, he revealed that having stayed clean from drug use for 23 years, he had checked himself into rehab after taking prescription pills and snorting heron.

Regarded as one of Hollywood’s best modern day actors, Hoffman’s cinematic break came with his role as trouble-making student George Willis Jr in the brilliant drama Scent of a Woman (1992).

After appearing in the hit blockbuster Twister (1996),  he began to delve into a mixture of acclaimed roles for the next few years including Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), The Talented Mr Ripley (1999) and Almost Famous (2000).

From 2000 onwards, he continued to juggle his cinematic work with admirable precision with roles in Red Dragon (2002) and Cold Mountain (2003) as well as appearing in the dopey comedy Along Came Polly (2004).

But it was his memorable performance as real-life writer Truman Capote in the biopic drama Capote (2005) which finally confirmed his status as one of Hollywood’s biggest talents as he swept several awards before eventually landing the coveted Best Actor Oscar in 2006.

That same year, he played the villainous Owen Davian in the action-sequel Mission Impossible III (2006) before following that up with key roles in The Savages (2007), Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead (2007), Synedoche New York (2008), The Boat That Rocked (2009), The Ides of March (2011) and Moneyball (2011).

In-between all those films, his popularity with the Oscars continued to flourish as he secured three further nominations for his performances as maverick CIA agent Gustav Avrakotos in Charlie Wilson’s War (2007), as disgraced priest Father Brendan Flynn in Doubt (2008) and as cult leader Lancaster Dodd in The Master (2012).

Prior to his death, Hoffman had recently played Pultarch Heavensbee in the blockbuster sequel The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was due to appear in the next installment Mockingjay: Part I later this year.

He also had a prominent following in Broadway which saw him earn three Tony Award nominations as well as directing some low-budget projects.

Hoffman is survived by his girlfriend Mimi O’Donnell and their three children.

Hoffman’s credentials speak for themselves. Oscar-nominated for “Charlie Wilson’s War,” “Doubt” and “The Master.” A winner for “Capote,” which brought perception of his abilities to a whole other level. But he was an even keel of consistency every step of the way. “Boogie Nights,” “The Big Lebowski,” “Happiness,” “Flawless,” “Magnolia,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Almost Famous,” “Punch-Drunk Love,” “25th Hour” — I’m just typing out every single film at this point — “Red Dragon,” the immensely underrated “Owning Mahowny,” “Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead,” even “Mission: Impossible III,” he’s bringing it. “The Ides of March,” “Moneyball,” on and on and on and on.

The truly great work? “Capote.” “Synechdoche, New York.” “The Master.” “Almost Famous.” These are his gifts to our love of the form.
