A decade ago, the Fantastic Four made a disappointing big-screen debut which threatened to tarnish the careers of its actors as well as Marvel Studios’ cinematic reputation.
But thanks to the much-lauded Avengers franchise, the comic-book film studio has ended up becoming one of the biggest corporations in the world and has decided to give its superhero quartet another go at making big bucks on the big-screen.
A new group of actors have taken on the roles of Fantastic Four characters Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and The Thing with the film’s official trailer being released last night.
Helmed by Chronicle director Josh Trank, the plot sees the scientist quartet having to deal with their new superpowers after achieving them whilst visiting an alternative universe. However they end up having to stop a fellow colleague from causing havoc after he also gains superhuman abilities.
Miles Teller (Divergent, Whiplash) plays Richards whose ability is to stretch while Kate Mara (House of Cards, Transcendence) portrays Sue, whose power is to become invisible. Seen as a controversial casting by some due to his ethnicity, Michael B. Jordan (The Wire, Fruitvale Station) plays Johnny who is able to turn into a flying man with flames while Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot, King Kong) plays The Thing, a rock-skinned superhero famed for his memorable catchphrase “It’s clobbering time”.
Toby Kebbell (Dead Man Shoes, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes) also features in the film as the villainous Victor Domashev / Doctor Doom, a role previously played by Julian McMahon (Nip/Tuck).
The original Fantastic Four outing from 2005 (and it’s 2007 sequel The Silver Surfer) almost ruined the careers of former stars Ioan Gruffudd (Richards), Jessica Alba (Sue Storm), Chris Evans (Johnny Storm) and Michael Chiklis (Thing). Remarkably Evans would return to the Marvel fold in style with his titular role as Steve Rogers / Captain America in the Captain America / Avengers films.
Fantastic Four will be released in the UK on August 6th.
