Michael Keaton replaces Hugh Laurie in Robocop remake

Following Hugh Laurie’s decision to not star in the upcoming remake of the 80s sci-fi thriller Robocop, his role has now been filled by Beetlejuice and Batman star Michael Keaton.

The news was announced via Digital Spy with director Jose Padhila issuing a statement about Keaton’s casting.

“Michael is the final addition to the amazing cast we have assembled for this film and it is so great to have the last puzzle piece in place. It is thrilling that everything has come together to bring this innovative new vision of RoboCop to life. We’ve got a great script, a great cast, some killer ED-209’s and I can’t wait to get Alex Murphy back on the street.”

Keaton, who has been somewhat limited in mainstream roles in the past few years, has been cast as Raymond Sellars, the man who helped build Robocop as previously played by Ronny Cox (Beverly Hills Cop, Total Recall) in the original.

Joel Kinnaman (The Killing, Safe House) will play the titular role of Alex Murphy/Robocop and is supported by a surprisingly good cast including Gary Oldman (Harry Potter and Dark Knight series), Abbie Cornish (Bright Star, W.E), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Negotiator) and Michael K. Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire).

The release date will be August 9th 2013.
