Matthew McConaughey battles to protect his marijuana empire in trailer for Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen

As one of Britain’s most prominent directors, Guy Ritchie has always performed well when making crime capers.

The likes of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Snatch (2000) and RocknRolla (2009) have all been cherished by filmgoers though his work on other genres hasn’t quite gone to plan.

But after his recent involvement with Disney’s live-action adaptation of Aladdin, the BAFTA-nominated film-maker has returned to familiar territory with his next film The Gentlemen.

Bolstering a strong cast and a popular British setting, the crime caper’s official trailer has landed and can be viewed below.

The plot centres on an American businessman who has built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him

Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar) tackles the lead role with strong support coming from Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword), Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Last Christmas), Michelle Dockey (Downton Abbey, Godless), Jeremy Strong (The Big Short, Succession), Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes, Ray Donovan), Colin Farrell (In Bruges, Widows) and Hugh Grant (The Man from U.N.C.L.E, A Very English Scandal).

The Gentlemen will be released in UK cinemas on New Year’s Day 2020.
