Back in 2016, Warner Bros took a detour from the adventures of renowned comic-book heroes Batman and Superman by making a film centering on various anti-heroes from the DC universe. Despite being a box-office hit, Suicide Squad received disappointing reviews and was later overshadowed by the surprise success of Wonder Woman (2017).
One character who overcame the critical hate was Harley Quinn, the former girlfriend of the sinister Joker (played in that film by Jared Leto). Having stolen the show as Harley, Australian actress Margot Robbie (I, Tonya, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) is now headlining a new spin-off film which takes her character on a different path away from the events of Suicide Squad.
Entitled Birds of Prey, the bonkers trailer sees our anti-hero take centre stage with Robbie clearly enjoying herself.
Directed by newcomer Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs), the plot sees Harley break away from the Joker as she joins forces with a trio of superheroes to help save a young girl from an evil crime lord.
Robbie is joined in the film by newcomer Ella Jay Basco (Grey’s Anatomy, Veep) as Cassandra ‘Cass’ Cain, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, Fargo) as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Friday Night Lights, True Blood) as Black Canary, Rosie Perez (Fearless, Bounty Hunters) as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina (Argo, Sharp Objects) as Victor Zsasz and Ewan McGregor (Trainspotting, Star Wars prequel trilogy) as the villainous Roman Sionis.
Robbie is also set to reprise the role in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel (due for release in 2021) as well as a possible Joker/Harley Quinn film which is yet to be confirmed.
Birds of Prey will soar into cinemas on 7 February 2020.
