Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy cast in female reboot of Ghostbusters

Something strange is happening to the new (and much-delayed) Ghostbusters film….

Devoted fans of the classic 1984 blockbuster have found themselves becoming less interested with the arrival of a third film in the franchise although things have finally started to pick up in the past few months.

But those expecting the likes of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson to strap on the gear and kick some ghoul ass will be pretty disappointed following recent news.

In what is a very bold move by the studio, director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) will be helming a Ghostbusters reboot headed by a FEMALE cast.

Ghostbusters-3

The new film will be a reunion for Feig as he works alongside his Bridemaids actresses Kristen Wiig (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Skeleton Twins) and Melissa McCarthy (The Heat, St Vincent) who have both signed up.

Saturday Night Live stars Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon have also been cast to round off a strong group of actresses with plenty of comedic experience.

The news comes after several years of delays and complications within the writing and acting teams. Murray, who played leading character Peter Venkman in the original film, initially agreed to the project only to finally drop out owing to the death of co-star and collaborator Harold Ramis.

The female-led Ghostbusters film is scheduled for release on July 22nd 2016.
