Golden Globes (television) nominations: House of Cards and Behind the Candelabra lead the way

With the film nominees being announced at the same time, the HFPA also revealed their contenders for television which produced more surprises and shock snubs.

In the Drama series group, House of Cards (leading with four mentions) and Masters of Sex have both been nodded alongside The Good Wife while British show Downton Abbey and the concluding season of Breaking Bad. Amazingly there were no places on the list for Boardwalk Empire, Game of Thrones, Homeland or Mad Men!

The lead drama actor and actress categories are almost entirely revamped, with Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston hoping to finally win his first Best Actor in a Drama Globe for his sublime work in the AMC series. His competition includes Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan) and James Spader (The Blacklist).

In the female category, the notable snub of Homeland’s Claire Danes means a more narrower race with the stand-out nominees including Kerry Washington (Scandal), Robin Wright (House of Cards) and Julia Marguiles (The Good Wife).

In the Best Comedy Series group, Girls is up against Brooklyn Nine Nine, Parks and Recreation, Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory.

The Lead comedy Actor and Actress categories saw less of a shakeup other than the surprising lack of recognition for Globe favourites Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin for the swan-song season of 30 Rock.

Michael J. Fox is a welcoming nominee for his comeback work on The Michael J. Fox Show and is up against Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory), Jason Bateman (Arrested Development) and Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine).

Amy Poehler one-upped her fellow Globes host Fey in landing a nom for Parks and Recreation. 2013 winner Lena Dunham is also back for Girls along with Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep) and Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie).

The long-form acting categories produced a strong lineup of film stars, from Michael Douglas and Matt Damon for Behind the Candelabra to Al Pacino and Helen Mirren for Phil Spector.

Mirren’s nod was one of several that will have pleased British fans with actors Chiwetel Ejiofor and Idris Elba being recognised in both TV and film this year. The former is nodded for Dancing on the Edge while the latter will hope to repeat his Golden-Globe winning success from 2011 with his performance in the BBC series Luther. Michael Sheen is also shortlisted in Best Actor in a Drama series for his turn in Masters of Sex along with Helena Bonham Carter in Best Actress in a Movie/Mini-series for her role in Burton & Taylor.

The British fantasy series, The White Queen also landed well with the Globes with nominations in the Movie/Miniseries category plus acting nods for Rebecca Ferguson and Janet McTeer.

Joining Candelabra, Dancing on the Edge and White Queen in the movie/miniseries race are American Horror Story: Coven and Top of the Lake.

The Supporting Actor field is contested by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul (yeah bitch!) as well as Josh Charles (The Good Wife), Rob Lowe (Behind the Candelabra), Corey Stoll (House of Cards) and veteran Jon Voight (Ray Donovan).

Finally, the Best Supporting Actress shortlist features Janet McTeer, Jacqueline Bissett (Dancing on the Edge), Hayden Panettierre (Nashville), Monica Potter (Parenthood) and Sofia Vergara (Modern Family). Disappointingly there was no place in the category for Anna Gunn’s Emmy award-winning performance in Breaking Bad.

The Golden Globes will be hosted for the second year in a row by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler on January 12th 2014.
