With the Oscars still some time away, awards season is finally starting to warm up after the Golden Globes announced their film nominations for 2018.
The fantasy drama The Shape of Water, which centres on a romance between a mute cleaner and an Amphibian man, leads the way with a majestic seven nominations, which include the coveted Best Motion Picture (Drama) accolade.
British star Sally Hawkins is in contention for the Best Actress (Drama) award, while co-stars Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins are up for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor, respectively.
Additionally, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro earns double nods for his writing and directing, while composer Alexandre Desplat receives is name-checked for his musical score.
Steven Spielberg’s factual drama The Post and the comedic drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, also performed well with six mentions apiece, including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and directing nods for filmmakers Spielberg and Martin McDonagh.
In the case of The Post, Hollywood favourites Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks are both recognised for their leading roles, with the former receiving a record 32nd nomination for her portrayal of Washington Times publicist Katharine Graham.
Meanwhile, Three Billboards earned double acting noms for its cast, with Frances McDormand acknowledged in the Best Actress (Drama) category while co-star Sam Rockwell is up for Best Supporting Actor.
The rest of the Best Motion Picture (Drama) field is filled by the romantic drama Call Me by Your Name and Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk.
In one of the more unique stories of the day, Christopher Plummer earns a Best Supporting Actor nom for his portrayal of billionaire J. Paul Getty in the fact-based crime drama All the Money in the World, despite having no involvement with the film until a month ago.
The Oscar-winning veteran had only come onboard following the recent antics of Kevin Spacey that led to the role of Getty being recast!
In addition to Plummer’s nomination, the film also bagged a surprise Best Director nod for British filmmaker Ridley Scott, while leading star Michelle Williams is up for Best Actress (Drama).
Meanwhile, Daniel Day-Lewis receives a Best Actor (Drama) nomination for his retiring role in Phantom Thread and is joined in the category by rising young actor Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name) and early Oscar frontrunner Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour) for his portrayal of British prime minister Winston Churchill.
On the funny side of things, the indie comedy Lady Bird is up for four gongs, including the prestigious Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) accolade.
Irish starlet Saoirse Ronan and seasoned performer Laurie Metcalf are recognised for their performances, while filmmaker Greta Gerwig scores a nomination for her writing.
Despite being classed as a psychological horror, the hit Jordan Peele flick Get Out is shortlisted in the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) category alongside the musical extravaganza The Greatest Showman and autobiographical dramedies The Disaster Artist and I, Tonya.
In the acting fields, the aforementioned Ronan competes in a strong Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) field that features last year’s category winner Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes) and British dames Judi Dench (Victoria & Abdul) and Helen Mirren (The Leisure Seeker).
The fifth slot is taken by Australian star Margot Robbie for her portrayal of controversial ice skater Tonya Harding in I, Tonya, while co-star Allison Janney is in contention for Best Supporting Actress.
Meanwhile, British rookie Daniel Kaluuya competes in the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) category for his breakthrough role in Get Out and is joined by big name stars Steve Carell (Battle of the Sexes), Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) and James Franco (The Disaster Artist) for his portrayal of ridiculed actor and filmmaker Tommy Wiseau.
Elsewhere, musician-turned-actress Mary J. Blige earns a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in the race-relations drama Mudbound while Willem Dafoe receives a Best Supporting Actor nod for his role in the indie drama The Florida Project.

Finally, Angelina Jolie receives her second mention in the Best Foreign Language Film category for her Cambodian drama First They Killed My Father, with Chile’s A Fantastic Woman among its chief rivals.
As expected, the Globes overlooked a number of predicted contenders including Matt Damon (Downsizing), Jake Gyllenhaal (Stronger), Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Holly Hunter (The Big Sick), Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Call Me by Your Name).
