It’s that time of year again…
With the Oscars less than three months away, awards season is up and running with the Golden Globes announcing their list of film nominations for 2018.
The fantasy drama The Shape of Water, which centres on a romance between a mute cleaner and an Amphibian man, leads the way with seven nominations, which include the coveted Best Motion Picture (Drama) accolade.
British star Sally Hawkins is up for the Best Actress (Drama) award, while co-stars Octavia Spencer and Richard Jenkins are placed in the supporting categories. Additionally, Guillermo del Toro is recognised in the Best Director category.
Two other films that performed well were Steven Spielberg’s political drama The Post and Martin McDonagh’s comedic-drama Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, with both receiving six mentions apiece. Both are up for Best Film (Drama) alongside the romantic drama Call Me By Your Name and Christopher Nolan’s war blockbuster Dunkirk.
For The Post, Hollywood favourites Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep are both recognised for their roles, with the latter receiving a record 32nd nomination for her portrayal of Washington Times publicist Katharine Graham.
Her opposition in the Best Actress (Drama) category includes Jessica Chastain (Molly’s Game), and Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri).
Hanks faces stern competition in Best Actor (Drama) from Daniel Day-Lewis’s final performance in Phantom Thread as well as Oscar frontrunner Gary Oldman (Darkest Hour), Denzel Washington (Roman J. Israel, Esq.) and 21-year-old Timothée Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name).
A month ago, Christopher Plummer wasn’t even involved with Ridley Scott’s crime drama All the Money in the World yet the veteran Oscar winner has managed to score a last-minute Supporting Actor nod for his portrayal of real-life billionaire J. Paul Getty.
The role was originally played by Kevin Spacey until his recent antics led to his abrupt departure from the film. Scott himself received a surprise Best Director nomination, while Michelle Williams was recognised in Best Actress (Drama).
In the Comedy/Musical categories, Greta Gerwig’s indie comedy Lady Bird is up for four awards, including the important Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) category.
Irish performer Saoirse Ronan and co-star Laurie Metcalf are also mentioned in Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) and Supporting Actress respectively, though Gerwig herself surprisingly missed out on a Best Director nomination.
Ronan is competing in a strong Best Actress field that includes last year’s category winner Emma Stone (Battle of the Sexes) and British Dames Judi Dench (Victoria and Abul) and Helen Mirren (The Leisure Seeker).
Despite being classed as a psychological thriller, Get Out is shortlisted in Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) along with the musical extravaganza The Greatest Showman and biopics The Disaster Artist and I, Tonya.
British star Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out) will be competing in the Actor category along with Steve Carell (Battle of the Sexes), James Franco (The Disaster Artist), Hugh Jackman (The Greatest Showman) and Ansel Elgort (Baby Driver).
The Supporting Actor / Actress line-ups include familiar faces like Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Armie Hammer (Call Me By Your Name), Allison Janney (I, Tonya), Sam Rockwell (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) and pop singer-turned actress Mary J. Blige (Mudbound).
Legendary composer John Williams is once again recognised for his work on The Post, while the standout nominee in Best Animated Film is Pixar’s Mexican-themed animation Coco.
Finally, Angelina Jolie receives her second mention in Best Foreign Language film for her post-Vietnam War drama First They Killed My Father.
The 75th Golden Globe Awards will take place at The Beverly Hilton on 7 January 2018 with Seth Meyers onboard as host.
