2017 Golden Globe (film) nominations: La La Land leads with magnificent seven

With the Oscars due to take place in a couple of months time, awards season is starting to heat up after the Golden Globes announced their nominees for 2016/17.

As expected, the upcoming musical drama La La Land is the frontrunner with an impressive seven mentions which include Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical), Best Director for Damien Chazelle and acting nods for stars Ryan Gosling (Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical) and Emma Stone (Best Actress in a Comedy/Musical). The film is also up for the Screenplay, Original Score and Original Song prizes.

The coming-of-age drama Moonlight also performed well with six nominations including Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director (Barry Jenkins) and Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress mentions for Mahershala Ali and British star Naomie Harris.

Also doing well with five nominations was the indie drama Manchester by the Sea, which is shortlisted for Best Motion Picture (Drama), Best Director (Kenneth Lonergan) and Best Screenplay. Oscar frontrunner Casey Affleck is up for Best Actor (Drama) while co-star Michelle Williams is recognised in the Best Supporting Actress category.

In a versatile Best Motion Picture (Drama) category, Manchester and Moonlight are competing against the crime-thriller Hell or High Water, the war epic Hacksaw Ridge and the factual drama Lion. Hacksaw’s controversial director Mel Gibson is nominated for Best Director along with Damien Chazelle, Kenneth Lonergan, Barry Jenkins and surprise selection Tom Ford for the psychological drama Nocturnal Animals.

In the Best Actor (Drama) field, Casey Affleck is up against British star Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge) as well as Joel Edgerton (Loving), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Hollywood favourite Denzel Washington (Fences).

The Best Actress (Drama) line-up sees Natalie Portman targeting a third Globe win for her portrayal of former First Lady Jackie Kennedy in Jackie as she battles it out with Amy Adams (Arrival), Isabelle Huppert (Elle), Ruth Negga (Loving) and welcoming nominee Jessica Chastain (Miss Sloane).

In the Comedy/Musical categories, the fact-based comedy-drama Florence Foster Jenkins received four mentions including Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) while leading stars Meryl Streep (with a record 30th nomination) are also acknowledged. More surprisingly, co-star Simon Helberg (of The Big Bang Theory fame) also receives a Best Supporting Actor mention!

Remarkably, the adult-humoured superhero blockbuster Deadpool landed two nods for Best Film and Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for leading man Ryan Reynolds. Deadpool, Foster Jenkins and La La Land are joined in the Best Film category by the indie dramedy 20th Century Women and the Irish musical comedy Sing Street.

Ryan Gosling, Hugh Grant and Ryan Reynolds are competing in Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) with Irish star Colin Farrell (The Lobster) and shock nominee Jonah Hill (War Dogs) while Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) sees Emma Stone and Meryl Streep up against veteran Annette Bening (20th Century Women) and young starlets Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply) and Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen).

Elsewhere, British duo Dev Patel (Lion) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals) up against Mahershala Ali, Simon Helberg and veteran Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) in Supporting Actor while Michelle Williams and Naomie Harris battle it out with Viola Davis (Fences), Nicole Kidman (Lion) and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures) for Supporting Actress.

Finally, the Best Animated Film line-up sees Disney’s Moana and Zootopia nominated along with Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini and Sing.

There were a lot of notable snubs by the Globes, which may not bode well for certain contenders when the Oscars come around.

Clint Eastwood’s Sully and Martin Scorsese’s Silence were both completely ignored, while Tom Hanks was surprisingly left out in the Best Actor (Drama) category. Though he landed an acting nod for Fences, Denzel Washington missed out on a Best Director nomination, with the film itself missing Best Motion Picture (Drama).

The Golden Globe Awards will take place on 8 January 2017.
