With the Oscars a couple of months away, awards season is starting to heat up after the Golden Globes announced their nominations for 2017.
As expected, the romantic musical La La Land is the early frontrunner with an impressive seven nods, including the Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical) honour.
Additionally, high-profile stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are up for Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) and Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) respectively, while filmmaker Damien Chazelle earns double noms for his writing and directing. Furthermore, the film also competes in the Original Score and Original Song categories.
La La Land’s biggest competition looks set to come from Florence Foster Jenkins after the fact-based comedy-drama received four nominations, including Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical).
The great Meryl Streep receives a record 30th(!) acting nod for her portrayal of deaf heiress Florence Foster Jenkins herself, while British co-star Hugh Grant contests Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) for his role as St. Clair Bayfield.
More surprisingly, The Big Bang Theory star Simon Helberg earns a shock Best Supporting Actor nod for his turn as pianist Cosmé McMoon.
The other films to make the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) shortlist are the adult comic-book blockbuster Deadpool, the Irish musical comedy Sing Street, and the indie dramedy 20th Century Women.
On the dramatic side of things, the coming-of-age drama Moonlight performed well with six nominations including Best Motion Picture (Drama), as well as writing and directing nods for filmmaker Barry Jenkins.
Additionally, British star Naomie Harris and Mahershala Ali are both recognised in the Supporting Actress and Actor categories.
Similarly, the indie drama Manchester by the Sea scored five mentions, including Best Motion Picture (Drama) and double noms for filmmaker Kenneth Lonergan.
Early Oscar contender Casey Affleck is up for Best Actor (Drama) while co-star Michelle Williams is recognised in the Best Supporting Actress category.
The rest of the versatile Best Motion Picture (Drama) field is contested by the war epic Hacksaw Ridge, the crime thriller Hell or High Water, and the factual drama Lion.
From those three films, controversial Hollywood figure Mel Gibson is nominated for his directing of Hacksaw Ridge and is joined in his category by surprise nominee Tom Ford for the psychological drama Nocturnal Animals.
In the acting fields, the Best Actress (Drama) line-up sees Natalie Portman shortlisted for her portrayal of former First Lady Jackie Kennedy in Jackie, with Amy Adams (Arrival) and Isabelle Huppert (Elle) among her rival contenders.
Meanwhile, British star Andrew Garfield is nominated in the Best Actor (Drama) field for his performance as real-life war hero Desmond T. Doss, alongside the likes of Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Hollywood favourite Denzel Washington (Fences).
On the comedy front, Ryan Reynolds earns a welcoming Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nomination for his humorous turn as foul-mouthed superhero Wade Wilson in Deadpool while versatile actress Annette Bening (20th Century) competes against young starlets Lily Collins (Rules Don’t Apply) and Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen) in the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) category.
Elsewhere, British duo Dev Patel (Lion) and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nocturnal Animals) are up for Best Supporting Actor alongside veteran Jeff Bridges (Hell or High Water) in Best Supporting Actor while Viola Davis (Fences) and Nicole Kidman (Lion) are among the major actresses in contention for the Best Supporting Actress gong.
The rest of the notable acting nominees include Jessica Chastain (Miss Sloane), Joel Edgerton (Loving), Colin Farrell (The Lobster), Jonah Hill (War Dogs), Ruth Negga (Loving), and Octavia Spencer (Hidden Figures).
Meanwhile, the Best Animated Film line-up sees Disney’s Moana and Zootopia nominated alongside Kubo and the Two Strings, My Life as a Zucchini and Sing.
Finally, Germany’s Toni Erdmann and French features Elle and The Salesman are among the notable contenders for the Best Foreign Language accolade.
As to be expected, there were a number of key omissions, with Clint Eastwood’s Sully and Martin Scorsese’s Silence both completely ignored.
Additionally, performances from Warren Beatty (Rules Don’t Apply), Emily Blunt (The Girl on the Train), Tom Hanks (Sully), Lucas Hedges (Manchester by the Sea), Taraji P. Henson (Hidden Figures), Liam Neeson (Silence) and Michael Shannon (Nocturnal Animals) were also overlooked.
The 74th Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Sunday 8 January, with chat show host Jimmy Fallon on presenting duties.
