2016 Golden Globe (film) nominations: Carol and The Big Short come out on top

While many people are still coming to terms with some of the surprise nominees from yesterday’s Screen Actors Guild Award announcement, the Golden Globes have now weighed in with their contenders.

In the dramatic fields, the romantic drama Carol leads the way with a healthy five nominations, including a place on the Best Motion Picture (Drama) shortlist.

Central stars Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are both competing in the Best Actress (Drama) category, while filmmaker Todd Haynes and composer Carter Burwell are in contention for Best Director and Best Original Score.

Carol faces stern competition in the Drama category from a solid mix of films that consist of the western thriller The Revenant, the indie drama Room, the factual drama Spotlight, and more surprisingly, the post-apocalyptic blockbuster Mad Max: Fury Road.

In the acting line-ups, Alicia Vikander receives two Globe nods, including a Best Actress (Drama) nod for the factual drama The Danish Girl. Additionally, the Swedish star also earns a surprise Supporting Actress mention for the indie sci-fi Ex Machina.

Brie Larson (Room) and Irish starlet Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) also contest Best Actress (Drama) while the Best Actor (Drama) field sees early Oscar favourite Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and last year’s category winner Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl) compete against Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), and Will Smith (Concussion).

On the lighter side of things, the fact-based satire The Big Short is up for four prizes, including Best Motion Picture (Comedy or Musical).

Additionally, leading men Christian Bale and Steve Carell go head-to-head in the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) category, while filmmaker Adam McKay is in contention for Best Screenplay.

Despite controversy over its genre placement, the sci-fi blockbuster The Martian is acknowledged in the Best Motion Picture (Comedy/Musical) line-up alongside the autobiographical dramedy Joy and hit comedies Spy and Trainwreck.

Matt Damon (The Martian) and Al Pacino (Danny Collins) are among those recognised on the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) shortlist while Hollywood favourite Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) faces off against Amy Schumer (Trainwreck) and Dame Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van) in the Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) category.

Meanwhile, British actresses Dame Helen Mirren (Trumbo) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs) fight it out for the Best Supporting Actress gong while fellow homegrown stars Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) are up against surprise contender Sylvester Stallone (Creed) in the Best Supporting Actor field.

The rest of the notable acting nominees include Paul Dano (Love & Mercy), Jane Fonda (Youth), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Melissa McCarthy (Spy), Mark Ruffalo (Infinity Polar Bear), Michael Shannon (99 Homes) and Lily Tomlin (Grandma).

On the filmmaker front, veteran British filmmaker Ridley Scott (The Martian) finds himself up against the likes of Alejandro González Iñárritu (The Revenant), Tom McCarthy (Spotlight), and George Miller (Mad Max: Fury Road) in the Best Director category.

Elsewhere, blockbusters Fifty Shades of Grey, Furious 7 and Spectre are shortlisted in the Best Original Song category alongside Brian Wilson’s stirring ballad “One Kind of Love” from Love & Mercy.

Meanwhile, Pixar duo Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur are nominated for Best Animated Film alongside Anomalisa, The Peanuts Movie and Aardman’s Shaun the Sheep Movie.

Finally, Hungary’s Son of Saul and French pair The Brand New Testament and Mustang are among the primary contenders for Best Foreign Language Film.

Once again, a number of notable acting performances were ignored by the Globes, including Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Tom Hanks (Bridge of Spies), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Jacob Tremblay (Room) and Spotlight trio Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel McAdams.

The 73rd Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on 10 January 2016 with controversial British comedian Ricky Gervais back as host for a fourth time.
