Anne Hathaway belts out “I Dreamed a Dream” in teaser trailer for Les Miserables

The musical genre has been out of form lately but one of this year’s most anticipated films looks like it could revive the genre once again.

The first trailer has been released for Tom Hooper’s big-screen adaption of the acclaimed musical Les Miserables which features Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married, The Dark Knight Rises) singing a rendition of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ during a montage of clips from the film.

A majestic cast sees Hathaway starring as the starving prostitute Fantine with Hugh Jackman (X-Men, Australia) playing escaped convict Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe (Gladiator, Cinderella Man) as the villainous Inspector Javert.

The rest of the brilliant cast includes Amanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!) as Cosette, Eddie Redmayne (My Week with Marilyn) as Marius, newcomer Samantha Barks as Eponine, Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, The Dictator) as Monsieur Thenardier and Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter) as Madame Thenardier.

Hooper who won Best Director at the 2011 Oscars for his helming of The King’s Speech is responsible for adapting Victor Hugo’s novel which has been a major hit on the stage for many years now.

Though I’m not particularly keen on musicals, this one looks breathtaking in terms of its production and clearly a lot of hard work has been put into it. A cast like that is also essential for a film of this proportion to do well especially when most of these actors can sing.

Hathaway already looks and sounds brilliant especially with her version of ‘I Dreamed a Dream’. It is such a big year for her with this and her role as Catwoman coming up.

British fans of the musical will have to wait till January 2013 for the release. The Americans on the other hand get it a month before. Boo!
