2014 Emmy Awards: Breaking Bad enjoys farewell recognition while Modern Family ties Frasier record

It was a night to remember for various hit shows as the best of Hollywood came out to celebrate the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Starting in drama, it came as no surprise to see Breaking Bad dominate as the acclaimed AMC crime thriller scored five key wins for its memorable final season.

It defeated other major programmes like Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and True Detective to secure Outstanding Drama Series for the second year in a row.

Additionally, central star Bryan Cranston took home his fourth Lead Actor Emmy for his swansong turn as chemistry teacher-turned-drug lord Walter White while co-stars Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn both celebrated repeat victories in the supporting categories for their respective roles as Jesse Pinkman and Skyler White.

For Cranston, his triumph was made more remarkable after overcoming the likes of Jon Hamm (Mad Men), Kevin Spacey (House of Cards), and True Detective duo Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in a powerhouse Lead Actor bracket.

Elsewhere, Julianna Marguiles clinched her second Lead Actress gong for her lauded performance as Alicia Florrick in the latest series of the legal drama The Good Wife while Cary Joji Fukunaga bagged a key win in Best Directing for his work on HBO’s True Detective.

On the comedy front, ABC’s Modern Family claimed a FIFTH consecutive victory for Outstanding Comedy Series to tie with Frasier for the most successive wins in the category.

The family sitcom also nabbed a second Supporting Actor accolade for Ty Burrell as happy-go-lucky patriarch Phil Dunphy, as well as a Best Director gong for Gail Mancuso.

On the subject of repeat wins, Julia Louis-Dreyfus scored a third straight victory in Lead Actress for her acclaimed performance as vice president Selina Meyer in the HBO comedy Veep while Jim Parsons clinched his fourth Lead Actor honour for his hit role as Dr. Sheldon Cooper in The Big Bang Theory.

Having secured a guest Emmy win for her appearance in Masters of Sex one week earlier, Allison Janney enjoyed further success after landing the Supporting Actress gong for her role as Bonnie Plunkett in the CBS sitcom Mom.

In the miniseries line-ups, there was surprise British success for BBC’s Sherlock as the mystery drama bagged a hat-trick of Emmy victories for its Series 3 finale His Last Vow, including two for absent stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman.

The prolific Cumberbatch won Lead Actor for his hit role as Sherlock Holmes, and overcame strong competition from the likes of Mark Ruffalo (The Normal Heart) and Billy Bob Thornton (Fargo). Freeman (who was also nominated in the lead category for Fargo) prevailed in the Supporting Actor bracket ahead of four actors from The Normal Heart, while showrunner Steven Moffat landed a win for Outstanding Writing.

Despite underperforming in the main groups, FX’s television adaptation of Fargo, and HBO’s The Normal Heart were victorious in the Outstanding Miniseries and Television Movie categories.

There was also double joy for American Horror Story: Coven, as renowned stars Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates both took home Emmys for their lead and supporting roles in the latest spin-off of the FX anthology series.
