Towards the end of the 1960s, the United States was plagued by a series of troubling events that included the Vietnam War and the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy.
This sparked a series of protests that led to violence breaking out across the country and resulted in one of the most famous trials in American history.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 has been given the big-screen treatment with multi-award-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network) tackling the upcoming factual drama.
Bolstering a strong ensemble of actors, the Netflix-produced film has premiered a new full-length trailer online.
Directed by Sorkin, the story depicts the true events of how a group of seven defendants were charged with conspiracy and inciting to riot by the US government. These charges came after protests had broken out during the 1968 Democratic National Convention.
Oscar-winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything, The Danish Girl) and Golden Globe-winner Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat, The Spy) are the big names cast as two of the defendants with the other five roles occupied by recent Emmy winner Jeremy Strong (Succession, The Gentlemen), John Carroll Lynch (Fargo, Zodiac), Daniel Flaherty (Skins, The Americans), Noah Robbins (Miss Sloane, The Assistant) and Alex Sharp (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Hustle).
The rest of the film’s starry (and very male) cast includes Michael Keaton (Birdman, Spotlight), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Aquaman, Watchmen), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, Snowden), Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon, The Americans), Ben Shenkman (Angels in America, Billions), J.C. MacKenzie (Molly’s Game, The Irishman), Kelvin Harrison Jr. (Luce, Godfather of Harlem), John Doman (The Wire, Gotham) and Oscar-winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Dunkirk).
The Trial of the Chicago 7 will be released on Netflix globally on October 16.
