Dwayne Johnson portrays former UFC champion Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine trailer

A stirring trailer has been unveiled for The Smashing Machine.

The upcoming sports drama sees iconic wrestler-turned-Hollywood superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Black Adam) take on one of the biggest roles of his acting career so far.

Directed by Benny Safdie (Good Time, Uncut Gems), the film explores the life of former mixed martial-arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr, from his rise through the MMA world to his struggles with opioid addiction.

Johnson is joined in the biopic by his former Jungle Cruise co-star Emily Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada, Oppenheimer) who portrays Kerr’s then-wife Dawn Staples. Additionally, the rest of the cast includes real-life fighters Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten and Oleksandr Usyk.

Cited as a potential awards vehicle for Johnson, The Smashing Machine is due for release in the UK later this year.
