After making his fateful comeback as beloved smuggler Han Solo in the successful Star Wars blockbuster The Force Awakens, Harrison Ford is set to don the hat and whip again for another cinematic return as his second iconic character, Indiana Jones.
Disney have officially confirmed that a fifth installment of the action adventure series has been green-lit with Ford and his legendary director Steven Spielberg (Jaws, E.T: The Extra Terrestiral, Jurassic Park) both on board along with franchise veterans Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy.
On the news, Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn said:
“Indiana Jones is one of the greatest heroes in cinematic history, and we can’t wait to bring him back to the screen in 2019. It’s rare to have such a perfect combination of director, producers, actor and role, and we couldn’t be more excited to embark on this adventure with Harrison and Steven.”
The announcement doesn’t mention a writing team although it looks likely that franchise screenwriter George Lucas (American Graffiti, Star Wars series) will NOT be involved this time around.
Many fans of the original trilogy (Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Temple of Doom and The Last Crusade) were left disappointed by Indy’s last big-screen outing in which the adventurous archaeologist tackled Russian soldiers and the alien race in the ridiculed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008).
However given the terrific success of Ford’s return to Star Wars, many will hope that Disney and Spielberg can try to give Indy a proper send-off even though the main man himself will be 76 when the new film comes out!
Indiana Jones 5 has been scheduled for release on July 19th 2019.
