Daniel Day-Lewis portrays American president Abraham Lincoln in trailer for Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln

Throughout his successful directing career, Steven Spielberg has managed to enchant and teach us through his various films ranging from blockbusters like Jaws and E.T to serious films like Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.

But when Spielberg does serious, it usually works especially when he focuses on historical stories. After making the slavery drama Amistad back in 1997, he has decided to go back to that similar theme for his newest film, Lincoln, which documents the life of one of America’s greatest leaders: Abraham Lincoln. Its official trailer has just been released.

Two-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis (My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood) takes on the role of the iconic president with the film focusing on his attempts to abolish slavery in the mid 19th century whilst clashing with his cabinet.

Fellow two-time Oscar winner Sally Field (Norma Rae, Mrs Doubtfire) plays Lincoln’s wife Mary with further experience in the supporting cast coming from Joseph Gordon-Levitt (3rd Rock from the Sun, The Dark Knight Rises), Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, Men in Black) and David Strathairn (Good Night and Good Luck, The Bourne Ultimatum).

Spielberg is assisted on the project by his long-term producing partner Kathleen Kennedy with screenwriter Tony Kushner adaptating some of the film from the book Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.

Lincoln opens in UK cinemas on January 25th, 2013.
