Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson to play lead roles in Fifty Shades of Grey film

A couple of months after it was announced that the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey would be adapted onto the big-screen, there has been mass speculation over who will be starring as one of literature’s most treasured couples.

The wait is finally over for those fans after author EL James confirmed via Twitter that the key roles of Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele have now been cast.

Firstly, the female lead virginal student Anastasia will be portrayed by upcoming young actress Dakota Johnson (The Social Network, Ben and Kate).

“I am delighted to let you know that the lovely Dakota Johnson has agreed to be our Anastasia in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey”.

The more renowned role of mysterious billionaire Grey is to be taken on by Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam. He has also appeared in UK productions like Byker Grove and Queer as Folk as well as the Guillermo Del Toro blockbuster Pacific Rim.

“The gorgeous and talented Charlie Hunnam will be Christian Grey in the film adaptation of Fifty Shades of Grey.”

A variety of stars were linked with the parts including Henry Cavill, Garrett Hedlund, Emma Watson and Emilia Clarke but it looks as though the studio have elected for lesser known actors to take on the challenging roles of these characters.

Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) will be directing the Fifty Shades of Grey film which is due for release on August 1st 2014.
