BAFTA nominations: Bridge of Spies and Carol share nine nods apiece

Award season is starting to heat up intensively after BAFTA (British Academy Awards) announced their full line-up of nominees for 2016.

Sharing the lead this time around are Steven Spielberg’s Cold War biopic and Todd Haynes’ romantic drama Carol, both of which have nine nominations each including Best Film and Best Director. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s vengeance thriller The Revenant follows both films with eight mentions including Best Actor for Oscar favourite Leonardo Di-Caprio.

The trio are competing in the Best Film category alongside Oscar frontrunnners The Big Short (five nods) and Spotlight (three nods), the latter of which failed to land a Best Director nomination for Tom McCarthy. Instead his spot was taken by British helmer Ridley Scott for the sci-fi blockbuster The Martian.

Despite that film being overlooked in the main category, Martian picked up six nominations overall including a Best Actor nod for Matt Damon.

Another key absentee in the main categories was George Miller’s post-Apocalyptic flick Mad Max: Fury Road which missed out on Film and Director but did receive several technical nominations. Current box-office juggernaut Star Wars: The Force Awakens also did well with the techs as well as garnering a Best Film Music nod for veteran composer John Williams.

Best British Film is competed by six contenders which include the Amy Winehouse documentary Amy, the romantic drama Brooklyn and the sci-fi thriller Ex Machina.

In the acting categories, Hollywood heavyweights Damon and Di-Caprio are up for Best Actor along with Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs) and last year’s winner Eddie Redmayne (Danish Girl).

Best Actress sees experienced names like Cate Blanchett (Carol) and Dame Maggie Smith (The Lady in the Van) up against starlets Brie Larson (Room), Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) and Alicia Vikander (Danish Girl).

The latter star also received a mention in Best Supporting Actress for her role in Ex Machina. Her competition in that category includes Rooney Mara (Carol), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) and British duo Julie Walters (Brooklyn) and Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs).

Finally Best Supporting Actor sees homegrown trio Christian Bale (Big Short), Idris Elba (Beasts of No Nation) and Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies) battling it out with Benicio Del Toro (Sicario) and Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight).

In terms of significant snubs, there was no mentions at all for British productions like Legend, Sunset Song or Suffragette while the James Bond blockbuster Spectre was shut out completely!

Significant actors to be overlooked included Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Tom Hardy (Legend and The Revenant), Will Smith (Concussion), Carey Mulligan (Suffragette), Charlotte Rampling (45 Years), Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Helen Mirren (Trumbo) and Sylvester Stallone (Creed).

The 2016 BAFTAs will take place on Sunday February 14th (Valentine’s Day) at London’s Royal Opera House, with Stephen Fry hosting for the 11th time.
