Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep return for more ABBA antics in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again trailer

For all you fans of ABBA and the film Mamma Mia!, it’s time to say or (sing) “Here We Go Again”….

It’s hard to believe that 2018 will mark the ten year(!) anniversary of when the big-screen adaptation of the hit musical was released in cinemas. Though the original film had a satisfying conclusion, Universal Pictures have green-lit a follow-up that reunites the original cast and also delves into the past of some of our favourite characters.

An official trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has premiered online and promises more songs as well as one or two surprise plot points.

Directed by Ol Parker (Imagine Me & You, Now Is Good), the story sees Amanda Seyfried return as Sophie Sheridan, the original film’s bride as she discovers that she is pregnant. However from what is seen in the trailer footage, she is struggling to cope with the absence of her mother Donna (played again by the great Meryl Streep) whose fate looks grim. Donna’s old friends Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) show support to Sophie and end up reflecting on her mother’s past when she was young and adventurous.

Lily James (Cinderella, Baby Driver) is one of several additions to the cast as she portrays the young Donna alongside Alexa Davies (Harlots, Detectorists) and Jessica Keenan Wynn (The Knick, Billions) as the young versions of Rosie and Tanya.

The trailer also shows the return of Sophie’s biological father Sam (Pierce Brosnan) alongside his friends Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan SkarsgĂ„rd) with their younger selves being played by Jeremy Irvine (War Horse, The Railway Man), Hugh Skinner (Harlots, W1A) and newcomer Josh Dylan (Allied) respectively. There is also a glimpse of Sophie’s husband Sky (Dominic Cooper) to round off the original cast that are back.

Additionally, music legend / actress Cher (Mask, Moonstruck) makes a memorable appearance at the end of the trailer with Andy Garcia (The Untouchables, Ocean’s trilogy) and Omad Djalili (The Mummy, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man) also popping up in the film.

The follow-up will again use Abba’s music, which consists of classics and songs that weren’t included in the original film and will also feature the involvement of the stage musical’s creator Judy Craymer.

The Dancing Queens will be belting out the tunes when Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hits UK cinemas on July 27th 2018.
