2025 Golden Globe (TV) nominations: Shōgun and The Bear take centre stage

With awards season well and truly underway for 2024/25, the Golden Globes have unveiled their slate of nominations celebrating the best of the big and small screen throughout this past year.

On the television side of things, FX / Hulu giants Shōgun and The Bear lead the way with multiple nods across the drama and comedy fields.

In the case of Shōgun, the multi-Emmy-winning Japanese epic scored four mentions, including Best Television Series (Drama) as well as a hat-trick of noms for its cast members.

After clinching Emmy prizes for their lead performances in September, central stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are both in contention for Best Actor (Drama) and Best Actress (Drama) respectively, while co-star Tadanobu Asano is up for Best Supporting Actor.

Shōgun is joined in a stellar Best Television Series (Drama) line-up by Sky Atlantic’s The Day of the Jackal, Apple TV+’s Slow Horses, Prime Video’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and Netflix duo The Diplomat and Squid Game.

Oscar-winning British stars Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) and Eddie Redmayne (The Day of the Jackal) go head-to-head in the Best Actor (Drama) category where they come up against Donald Glover (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent) and surprise contender Billy Bob Thornton (Landman).

Meanwhile, the Best Actress (Drama) line-up sees Keira Knightley earn her first Globe television nod for her starring role in Netflix’s Black Doves with Kathy Bates (Matlock), Emma D’Arcy (House of the Dragon), Maya Erskine (Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Keri Russell (The Diplomat) among her rival nominees.

In the comedy brackets, the third series of FX’s The Bear is cooking on gas with a healthy five nominations, including a place on the Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical) shortlist.

Once again, the kitchen-based dramedy picked up four nods for its cast, with central stars Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri looking to defend their Best Actor and Best Actress (Comedy/Musical) crowns after previous success at last season’s Globes.

Additionally, fellow actors Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Liza Colón-Zayas are both acknowledged in the supporting categories after landing Emmy recognition in September.

The fourth series of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building also impressed Globe voters with four noms including Best Television Series (Comedy/Musical) while popular cast members Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez all earn repeat nods in the lead acting fields.

The rest of the Best Television Series (Comedy/Musical) field is contested by ABC’s Abbott Elementary, HBO Max’s Hacks and two new candidates in the form of Netflix duo The Gentlemen and Nobody Wants This.

Meanwhile, the Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) line-up sees former category winners Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and Jean Smart (Hacks) come up against Kristen Bell (Nobody Wants This) and Kathryn Hahn (Agatha All Along) while Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) and Jason Segel (Shrinking) round off the Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nominees.

In the miniseries fields, Netflix dramas Baby Reindeer, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and Ripley are among the standout contenders in contention for honours with three nominations each.

All three programmes compete on a versatile Best Television Series (Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television) shortlist that is rounded off by Apple TV+’s Disclaimer, and HBO Max duo The Penguin and True Detective: Night Country.

After achieving Emmy recognition earlier this year, Baby Reindeer creator and star Richard Gadd competes in a powerhouse Best Actor (Limited, Anthology or TV Movie) line-up alongside fellow Scot Ewan McGregor (A Gentleman in Moscow).

Additionally, Irish duo Colin Farrell (The Penguin) and Andrew Scott (Ripley) are also recognised for their lead performances, with the rest of the field completed by Kevin Kline (Disclaimer) and breakout star Cooper Koch (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story).

Meanwhile, Oscar-winning actresses Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer), Kate Winslet (The Regime) and Emmy winner Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country) lock horns for the Best Actress (Limited, Anthology or TV Movie) gong and are joined by Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Sofía Vergara (Griselda) and Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. the Swans).

Elsewhere, Hollywood legend Harrison Ford earns his first Globe television nod for his supporting turn in Apple TV+’s Shrinking with Javier Bardem (Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story), Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) and surprise nominee Diego Luna (La Máquina) also acknowledged.

In contrast, the Best Supporting Actress line-up sees Emmy-winning Yorkshire star Jessica Gunning (Baby Reindeer) contest her category alongside the likes of Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), Dakota Fanning (Ripley), Allison Janney (The Diplomat) and Kalis Reis (True Detective: Night Country).

On top of presenting this year’s ceremony, comedian star Nikki Glaser finds herself in contention for the Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television prize for her stand-up show Someday You’ll Die.

Previous Globe winners Jamie Foxx, Ali Wong and Ramy Youssef also contest the shortlist, which is completed by chat show host Seth Meyers and Hollywood favourite Adam Sandler.

On top of earning a Best Actor (Comedy/Musical) nod for his starring role in Netflix’s A Man on the Inside, veteran star Ted Danson is also set to be honoured with the 2025 Carol Burnett Award for his outstanding contribution to television over the past six decades.

However, it was a disappointing day for various programmes as the likes of Bad Sisters, English Teacher, Fallout, Industry, Palm Royale and Say Nothing were completely ignored.

Additionally, the notable acting snubs included Marisa Abela (Industry), Brian Jordan Alvarez (English Teacher), Jeff Bridges (The Old Man), Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Robert Downey Jr. (The Sympathizer), Walton Goggins (Fallout), Tom Hollander (Feud: Capote vs. the Swans), Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game), Nava Mau (Baby Reindeer), Peter Sarsgaard (Presumed Innocent), and Kristen Wiig (Palm Royale).

The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 5 January.
