2023 SAG Award nominations: The Banshees of Inisherin and Ozark take charge in film and TV categories

With the Golden Globes done and dusted last night, the Screen Actors Guild have now unveiled their list of nominations for the biggest contenders across film and television.

On a hectic day for fans of the Oscar race, the Irish dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin and the multiverse-based dramedy Everything Everywhere All at Once lead the way with five nods each.

Both films are shortlisted for the crucial Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture accolade alongside Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama The Fabelmans, the period epic Babylon and the female-led ensemble drama Women Talking.

After dominating last night’s Golden Globe Awards, Banshees scored an additional four nominations for its cast, with Colin Farrell recognised in the Leading Male Actor field.

Additionally, co-stars Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan are both in contention for Supporting Male Actor, while Kerry Condon competes in the Supporting Female Actor category.

Everything Everywhere All at Once also performed well on the acting front, with recent Golden Globe winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan in contention for Leading Female Actor and Supporting Male Actor respectively.

Additionally, the experienced Jamie Lee Curtis is joined in the Female Supporting Actor category by her younger co-star Stephanie Hsu.

However, the pair face a stern challenge from last night’s Globe victor Angela Bassett for the Marvel blockbuster sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Meanwhile, Austin Butler will be looking to follow up his Best Actor win at last night’s Golden Globes after being nominated for his portrayal of music icon Elvis Presley in Elvis. His versatile competition includes Brendan Fraser (The Whale) and British veteran Bill Nighy (Living).

A strong Leading Female Actor category sees Cate Blanchett nominated again for Tár as she faces off against real-life portrayals from Ana de Armas (as Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe) in the diverse Blonde, and Danielle Deadwyler (as grieving mother Mamie-Till Mobley) in Till.

The rest of the main acting contenders are Viola Davis (The Woman King), Adam Sandler (Hustle), Hong Chau (The Whale), Paul Dano (The Fabelmans) and Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse).

Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Ensemble field features a stellar line-up of films including the comic-book thriller The Batman, and blockbuster sequels Avatar: The Way of Water, and Top Gun: Maverick.

Once again, there were several performances snubbed by the Guild including Jessie Buckley (Women Talking), Tom Cruise (Top Gun: Maverick), Dolly de Leon (Triangle of Sadness), Tom Hanks (Elvis), Janelle Monáe (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery), Carey Mulligan (She Said), Brad Pitt (Babylon), Ben Whishaw (Women Talking), and Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans).

In a change of tradition, the 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards will air on Netflix’s YouTube channel with the ceremony itself taking place on 26 February, at Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
