This afternoon saw the newly-reformed Golden Globes unveil their nominations for the best of television in 2023 with the final series of HBO’s Succession out on top with a record-breaking nine nods.
The farewell chapter of the acclaimed family saga is on the shortlist for Best Television Series (Drama) where it is joined by fellow HBO series The Last of Us, as well as Paramount+’s 1923, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show and Netflix duo The Crown and The Diplomat.
Remarkably, eight of Succession’s cast members are in contention for acting honours, with Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong all competing in the Best Actor (Drama) category.
Fellow trio Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck and Alexander Skarsgård go head-to-head in the Best Supporting Actor line-up, while Sarah Snook and J. Smith-Cameron are nominated for Best Actress (Drama) and Best Supporting Actress respectively.
Another notable drama series garnering recognition for its final series is The Crown, which amassed a hat-trick of noms for its cast.
Imelda Staunton and Dominic West contest the lead acting categories for their respective portrayals of the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, while Elizabeth Debecki earns a Best Supporting Actress nod for her turn as Princess Diana.
Meanwhile, Dame Helen Mirren (1923), Gary Oldman (Slow Horses) and Bella Ramsey (The Last of Us) are the other homegrown stars in contention for the drama awards and are joined by other high-profile contenders including Pedro Pascal (The Last of Us), Keri Russell (The Diplomat) and Emma Stone (The Curse).
In the comedy fields, the latest series of FX’s The Bear and Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building hold the early advantage with five nominations, including Best Television Series (Comedy or Musical).
In the case of The Bear, the kitchen-based dramedy secured a quartet of acting nods for its ensemble with Jeremy Allen White and Ayo Edebiri in contention for the leading accolades, while co-stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Abby Elliott are up for the supporting awards.
Fellow contender Only Murders in the Building also garnered four acting noms with central trio Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez all recognised in the lead categories.
Additionally, the trio are joined by a record-breaking 33rd Golden Globe nomination for the great Meryl Streep in the Best Supporting Actress bracket.
Elsewhere, the final series of HBO’s Barry and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso are also in contention for Best Television Series (Comedy/Musical) alongside ABC’s Abbott Elementary and Amazon Freevee’s Jury Duty.
Previous Globe-winning stars Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) and Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso) are among the high-profile comedy nominees and are joined by the likes of Elle Fanning (The Great), Bill Hader (Barry), Natasha Lyonne (Poker Face), James Marsden (Jury Duty), Jason Segel (Shrinking), and Hannah Waddingham (Ted Lasso).
On the miniseries side of things, Netflix’s Beef, Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & the Six, and the latest series of FX’s Fargo are among the main contenders for the limited accolades with three nominations each.
All three programmes are on the shortlist for Best Television Series (Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television) with the rest of the category filled by Netflix’s All the Light We Cannot See, Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, and Apple TV+’s Lessons in Chemistry.
British stars Juno Temple (Fargo) and Rachel Weisz (Dead Ringers) contest a strong Best Actress (Limited, Anthology or TV Movie) field alongside Riley Keough (Daisy Jones & the Six), Brie Larson (Lessons in Chemistry), Elizabeth Olsen (Love & Death) and Ali Wong (Beef).
Meanwhile, the high-profile contenders for Best Actor (Limited, Anthology or TV Movie) include Jon Hamm (Fargo), Woody Harrelson (White House Plumbers), Steven Yeun (Beef), and homegrown pair Sam Claflin (Daisy Jones & the Six) and David Oyelowo (Lawmen: Bass Reeves).
Finally, renowned comedians Ricky Gervais, Chris Rock and Amy Schumer contest the newly-formed Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category alongside Trevor Noah, Sarah Silverman and Wanda Sykes.
Despite the newly-expanded acting fields, a number of performances were overlooked by the organisation including Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show), Harrison Ford (Shrinking), Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso), Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show) and Abbott Elementary trio Janelle James, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tyler James Williams.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on 7 January, with a host not yet confirmed.
