2022 SAG Award nominations: House of Gucci, Succession and Ted Lasso score big

The latest awards season continues to intensify after the Screen Actors Guild Awards unveiled their list of nominations for both film and television.

On the cinematic front, the factual drama House of Gucci is the joint tally leader with three nods, including a place on the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture shortlist.

The film, which follows the scandalous life of Italian socialite Patrizia Reggiani, also picked up acting mentions for Lady Gaga as Reggiani and Jared Leto as Paolo Gucci.

The latest big-screen effort from Sir Ridley Scott contests a strong Outstanding Performance by a Cast field, alongside the political satire Don’t Look Up, the sports biopic King Richard, and family dramas Belfast and CODA.

Though it missed out on the main shortlist, the Golden Globe-winning western The Power of the Dog picked up a hat-trick of acting nods for its cast.

British star Benedict Cumberbatch competes in the Leading Male Actor category, while co-stars Kirsten Dunst and Kodi Smit-McPhee are up for the supporting accolades.

Elsewhere, the Leading Female Actor field sees the aforementioned Lady Gaga lock horns with three more fact-based performances; Jessica Chastain as televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Jennifer Hudson as soul legend Aretha Franklin in Respect, and recent Golden Globe victor Nicole Kidman as television icon Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos.

Once again, the final slot is given to British star Olivia Colman for her lauded turn in the drama The Lost Daughter.

Meanwhile, recent Globe-winning winners Will Smith and Andrew Garfield contest the Leading Male Actor line-up for their respective portrayals of tennis coach Richard Williams in King Richard, and playwright Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick…Boom!.

The pair are joined in their category by Oscar-winning stars Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).

In the Supporting Female Actor line-up, Oscar frontrunner Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) competes against Caitríona Balfe (Belfast), Cate Blanchett (Nightmare Alley) and Ruth Negga (Passing), while deaf performer Troy Kotsur (CODA) is joined in the Supporting Male Actor field by Hollywood favourites Ben Affleck (The Tender Bar) and Bradley Cooper (Licorice Pizza).

Meanwhile, Marvel duo Black Widow and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings are included in a versatile Outstanding Stunt Performance category alongside the sci-fi epic Dune, the action sequel The Matrix Resurrections, and the James Bond blockbuster No Time to Die.

As to be expected, there were plenty of strong snubs, with Kristen Stewart surprisingly ignored for her portrayal of Princess Diana in Spencer.

The other high-profile omissions include Jodie Comer (The Last Duel), Leonardo DiCaprio (Don’t Look Up), Jamie Dornan (Belfast), Aunjanue Ellis (King Richard), Ciarán Hinds (Belfast) and recent Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) winner Rachel Zegler (West Side Story).

The 28th Screen Actors Guild Awards will take place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California on 12 January 2022.

In the television fields, HBO’s Succession and Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso both lead the way with five nominations apiece.

Fresh from its Globe ‘success’ last Sunday, Succession is up for the prestige Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series accolade, as well as earning a further four nods for its cast members.

Chief stars (and on-screen family members) Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong are all in contention for the Male Actor (Drama) prize, while Sarah Snook is included in the Female Actor (Drama) category.

The family saga is joined in the Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble shortlist by Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show, Netflix’s Squid Game, and Paramount Network’s Yellowstone.

From those programmes, The Morning Show stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon contest the Female Actor (Drama) category alongside Elisabeth Moss (The Handmaid’s Tale) and surprise nominee Jung Ho-yeon (Squid Game).

Meanwhile, Succession’s male cast are joined in the Male Actor (Drama) field by Billy Crudrup (The Morning Show) and Korean performer Lee Jung-jae (Squid Game).

Elsewhere, Ted Lasso scored a welcoming five mentions including Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series where it competes against HBO Max’s Hacks, Netflix’s The Kominsky Method, and Hulu duo The Great and Only Murders in the Building.

The football-based ‘sitcom’ also garnered four acting noms for its cast, with Emmy and Globe winner Jason Sudeikis back to defend his Male Actor (Comedy) crown alongside co-star Brett Goldstein.

Comic veterans Steve Martin and Martin Short also earn Male Actor (Comedy) noms for their roles in Only Murders in the Building, while Michael Douglas rounds off the bracket for his swansong turn in The Kominsky Method.

Meanwhile, Ted Lasso actresses Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple lock horns in the Female Actor (Comedy) category where they are joined by Elle Fanning (The Great), Sandra Oh (The Chair) and Jean Smart (Hacks).

Recent Globe winner Smart also finds herself in contention for the Female Actor (Television Movie or Limited Series) gong for her supporting role in HBO’s Mare of Easttown.

However, British co-star Kate Winslet is heavily favoured to win that category with the rest of the line-up filled by Jennifer Coolidge (The White Lotus), Cynthia Erivo (Genius: Aretha), and Margaret Qualley (Maid).

After being surprisingly overlooked by the Globes, Mare of Easttown’s Evan Peters earns a Male Actor (TV Movie/Limited Series) nod and is joined by Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus), Oscar Isaac (Scenes from a Marriage), and recent award winners Michael Keaton (Dopesick) and Ewan McGregor (Halston).

Finally, the Outstanding Stunt Performance category sees Marvel spin-offs The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki go head-to-head with Netflix duo Cobra Kai and Squid Game.

Once again, a number of small-screen performances were overlooked by the guild, including Sterling K. Brown (This is Us), Jessica Chastain (Scenes from a Marriage), Kaitlyn Dever (Dopesick), Hannah Einbinder (Hacks), Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building), Matthew Macfadyen (Succession), Julianne Nicholson (Mare of Easttown), Issa Rae (Insecure), MJ Rodriguez (Pose) and O Yeong-su (Squid Game).
